Red Thunder inverts the logic of the black and yellow Thunder colourway, keeping the dark upper and swapping the accent to a deep crimson so the shoe reads hotter and less like signage. The 4 sits in the stretch of the line Tinker Hatfield shaped after taking over from the Air Jordan 3, when the series developed hardware that could be recognised across models: the Jumpman on the tongue, elephant print, exposed structure. Red as an accent has been part of the brand's colour identity since the Chicago era, alongside black and white. On the 4 it picks out the eyelets and midsole edge, giving a shoe with a lot of surface a set of lines to follow.
Dark upper with a red accent is a winter combination. Wear it with black straight leg denim and a maroon or burgundy knit so the red is echoed rather than repeated exactly. Or go tonal, all charcoal with a black jacket, letting the crimson be the single warm note. The 4 has bulk, so give it a straight or wide trouser and let the hem stack slightly. Wear a cushioned sock; the fit is roomier than the 1. Brush the upper dry, keep it off salted winter pavements where possible, and loosen the laces before storage so the plastic wings are not held under constant tension.
The 4 has become one of Jordan Brand's most worked on shapes, including under Travis Scott's Cactus Jack banner, which covers the Air Jordan 1, 4 and 6. The brand's wider partner list runs through Off-White with Virgil Abloh, Dior, Comme des Garcons, Supreme and KAWS, plus Drake, Billie Eilish, J Balvin, Eminem and Nicki Minaj in music. That density of attention is why a general release 4 in a strong colourway still moves in a resale market valued at roughly 2 billion dollars. The underlying appeal remains what it always was: basketball and hip hop pointing at the same shoe.
The 4 is defined by parts you can see. Mesh netting panels open the side walls, plastic lace wings sit at the throat so lacing tension can be varied, and a moulded heel counter locks the rear foot. Nike Air cushioning sits underneath, present in the line from the Air Jordan 2 onward, which makes the 4 one of the more comfortable retro silhouettes for full days on foot. Dark suede style uppers hold grit in the nap and mark when wet, so brush dry before anything else and avoid soaking. Check the netting for grit after wear, since embedded dirt abrades the mesh from inside.
