Released on 3 July 2024 and part of Nike's Air Zoom Alphafly NEXT% 3 line. This release has a atomknit upper in White/Purple Agate/Vivid Grape/Black. White Vivid Grape is the version of the Alphafly built to be seen from the side of the road. Racing shoes are photographed more than almost any other category now, and a bright violet against white is designed to read at speed on a broadcast camera and in a finish-line photograph. Underneath the colour sits the most consequential running technology Nike has produced: the combination of ZoomX foam and a full length carbon fibre plate that launched with the Vaporfly in 2017, where peer research found improvements in marathon time of up to 4.2 percent. That is the lineage this shoe belongs to, and the colourway is doing the job Nike colourways have done since it cut a window into a midsole to show off the Air unit.
Two uses. First, racing: 10K upward, and best at half and full marathon distance where the plate geometry repays a consistent stride for a long time. Second, one or two race-pace sessions beforehand, purely so your calves and ankles learn the platform before race morning. Do not put daily mileage through these, the foam is not built for it. Take your usual size with a little toe room, race in thin socks because the upper is unlined, and avoid wet cambered roads where a tall stack feels least stable. After each use wipe the white upper immediately, let them air dry at room temperature, and store them flat so the plate keeps its shape.
The through line from Bill Bowerman to a carbon plate is straighter than it looks. Bowerman got into shoemaking because he believed American runners deserved something lighter than the market offered, and the waffle iron experiment that gave the 1972 Moon Shoe and 1974 Waffle Trainer their tread was an obsession with weight. Steve Prefontaine, his pupil, became Nike's first track endorser and its enduring symbol, and the brand went on to sponsor Sebastian Coe, Carl Lewis, Michael Johnson and Allyson Felix. Modern marathon racing is where that obsession pays out publicly, and the loud colourways exist because the finish line is a broadcast surface as much as a sporting one.
A plated racer is built as one system. A very light, highly responsive foam provides the stack, a rigid full length plate sits inside it to stiffen the ride and direct the roll of the foot forward, and the upper is reduced to the minimum material needed to keep the foot located, which is why these shoes weigh so little. The rules are explicit: World Athletics capped sole thickness at 40mm with one rigid plate on 31 January 2020, and required four months of open retail availability, and compliant models remain legal for competition. In a white and violet build every crease and mark on that thin upper is visible, so this is a shoe you should treat as race equipment, not as a daily trainer.
