Released on 5 June 2024 and part of Nike's Air Zoom Pegasus 41 line. This release has a mesh upper in White/Psychic Blue/Speed Yellow/Speed Red. Every generation of Pegasus has to answer the same question: what does a runner need on an ordinary Tuesday. The 41 answers it with Nike Air and a neutral platform, and White with Psychic Blue and Red answers the styling half of it with genuine brightness. This is the colourway that looks like race kit even though the shoe underneath is a daily trainer, a white base cut with a vivid blue and a red accent that makes it visible in traffic and in photographs. Nike has been selling that particular promise since Bill Bowerman decided in the mid 1960s that American runners were owed better hardware, and it still lands because the ordinary run is where most people live.
Recipe one, running: black shorts, a white technical tee, blue socks, letting Psychic Blue set the colour and the red stay a single accent. Recipe two, off duty: light grey sweatpants, a white tee, a navy zip through, where the bright overlays keep the fit from going flat. Use it for easy runs, long runs and treadmill mileage on road surfaces, and keep it off trails where the white will not survive. True to size with a thumb of toe room. Wipe the white mesh with a damp cloth before grime sets, clean the midsole regularly, and air dry only, because heat and machines destroy foam.
Nike's ownership of the everyday run traces to its founding and to Steve Prefontaine, Bill Bowerman's pupil at Oregon, who became the brand's first track endorser and its symbol of running as attitude rather than as sport, and who has a statue at Nike headquarters. The sponsored roster that followed included Sebastian Coe, Carl Lewis, Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Michael Johnson and Allyson Felix. But the shoe that carries this technology is aimed at the audience Just Do It was written for in 1988, the amateur going out anyway, with the first advertisement featuring 80 year old runner Walt Stack. This colourway just makes that runner easier to see.
A neutral daily road trainer built on Nike Air, the pressurised gas unit sealed into the midsole that has been the company's cushioning platform since the 1987 Air Max made the technology a design feature you could see. The upper is engineered mesh for breathability, here in white with Psychic Blue through the overlays and red as a small accent. The ride is balanced rather than plush or firm, which is why the Pegasus absorbs high weekly mileage without going vague underfoot. A white base is the least practical option for road use and will pick up spray within a few runs, though the blue overlays hide it. Neutral support means no stability correction built in.
