Origin
Released on 5 February 2025 and part of On Running's Cloud 6 line. This release has a mesh upper in Black/White. On is a Swiss story that starts with a garden hose. Olivier Bernhard, a former Ironman and duathlon world champion, retired and went hunting for a better ride, stapling lengths of hose to the bottom of shoes to see what a hollow pod would do underfoot. Nike passed on the idea. He built it anyway, founding On in Zurich in 2010 with David Allemann and Caspar Coppetti. Those hollow pods became CloudTec, and the Cloud became the shoe the entire brand is named after. The Cloud 6 is the current chapter of that original silhouette: same slip-on ease, a wider opening for easier entry, a new sockliner, more everyday comfort. Black White is the version that quietly disappears into whatever you already own.
Utility
Two ways to wear it. First as a travel shoe: tapered joggers or slim trousers, a plain tee, speed laces already set so they come off in one motion at security. Second as everyday city kit: mid-wash denim, a crew sweat, socks kept low, the black upper shrugging off dusty pavements. It is built for commuting, long airport days and casual walking, not for trails or rough ground, and it is not the shoe for standing still all day. On went from a garage idea to a New York listing in eleven years, raising 746 million dollars in its 2021 IPO and nearly doubling revenue to around 2 billion in the two years after. The Cloud is the model carrying all of that weight: the pod sole is recognisable from across a street, which is exactly why it crossed out of running clubs and into airports, offices and weekend coffee runs. Construction
The upper is breathable recycled polyester with large ventilation pores, cut close through the midfoot and opened up at the collar so you can step straight in. That is deliberate, because the speed lacing system means you almost never tie these, and traditional laces come in the box if you prefer them. Underneath, CloudTec pods sit beneath a Speedboard, so each landing compresses the pods and the plate snaps them back for take-off. Lab measurement puts the stack around 28 mm at the heel and 20 mm at the forefoot with an 8 mm drop, and the shoe weighs roughly 9.4 oz in a men's size 9. The outsole rubber runs 3.5 mm thick and wears down exceptionally slowly.
