Designed by Peter Moore and released on 7 April 2022 as part of Nike's Dunk line. This release has a leather upper in White/Midnight Navy/Electro Purple. By 1980 Nike held roughly half of the US athletic shoe market and went public, and a decade later it moved into the Beaverton, Oregon world headquarters and opened the first Niketown in downtown Portland. That was the moment the company started designing colour the way a brand designs identity rather than the way a team orders uniforms. The Dunk High is the clearest survivor of that transition: a tall, collared basketball shape whose upper is split into large blocks that any two colours can occupy. Electro Purple and Midnight Navy is a deliberately unnatural pairing, an electric violet pushed against a navy so deep it reads black indoors. No school ever wore this. That is precisely the appeal.
This is a shoe for cold-weather layering, where the tall collar has something to sit against. Recipe one: black wide-leg cargo trousers stacked slightly over the collar, a navy hooded sweatshirt, and a black overshirt, letting only the purple Swoosh break through. Recipe two: dark indigo selvedge denim cuffed once so the collar is fully visible, a grey marl crewneck, and a navy topcoat, which lets the two colours in the shoe answer each other up the leg. Lace through the top eyelet if you want ankle support, or skip it for a looser collar flop. Wipe the navy leather with a damp cloth and dry it away from heat, and keep the purple out of prolonged direct sun, since saturated violets are the first colours to fade.
Nike's court shoes became urban dress before they became fashion, moving from basketball into hip hop through the 1980s and reappearing in the casual and athleisure wardrobes of the 1990s and 2000s. The Dunk High carried that better than most because the tall collar reads as intent: you cannot wear it casually by accident. Nike has never been shy about friction on this front either. Its unauthorised 1987 use of the Beatles' Revolution ended in a lawsuit and pulled ads by March 1988, and Nike SB's 2005 appropriation of Minor Threat's album art drew a public rebuke from Ian MacKaye and a formal apology. The brand's loudest colourways have always belonged to the same instinct that got it into those rooms.
The high-cut collar is the structural difference here. It rises above the ankle bone and carries a padded, foam-filled tongue and quarter panel, so the shoe holds the foot higher and takes longer to break in than its low-top sibling. Leather panels are stitched rather than bonded, which is why Dunks crease along the toe box instead of delaminating. The flat rubber cupsole traces its logic back to Bowerman's fixation on tread, the waffle experiment that produced the 1972 Moon Shoe and the 1974 Waffle Trainer and put outsole design at the centre of Nike engineering. Electro Purple sits on the Swoosh and collar where it catches light and movement, while Midnight Navy takes the toe and heel to keep the whole thing wearable.
