Released on 10 December 2024 and part of Nike's Dunk SB line. This release has a suede upper in Dark Smoke Grey/Black/Smoke Grey/Photon Dust/Gum Light Brown/Light Smoke Grey. SB is the part of Nike that had to earn its place rather than buy it. Skateboarders adopted the Dunk before Nike built anything for them, and the SB line was the company's attempt to answer that properly, with a version of the shoe engineered for the way a board actually wears footwear. Dark Smoke Grey is the anti colourway on a silhouette famous for colour: a deep, slightly warm grey that reads as workwear rather than team kit. It is the shade you choose when you want the shape and none of the announcement. On a shoe whose history is built on loud two tone releases, a full grey execution is a quieter statement that ages far better in daily wear.
Utility
First recipe: baggy black or charcoal denim, a washed graphic tee and a hooded sweatshirt, the skate silhouette this shoe was padded for, with grey keeping the whole thing low key. Second recipe: olive cargo trousers with a cream crewneck and a brown jacket, where the warm grey slots into an earth toned palette that a bright Dunk would break. Dark Smoke Grey hides scuffs and street dirt better than any white or pastel Dunk. SB builds fit slightly snugger than retro Dunks because of the added padding, so consider your true size with thinner socks. Brush suede or nubuck panels dry, use an eraser on marks, and keep them out of prolonged wet.
Influence
Nike SB's cultural record includes its worst borrowing as well as its best. In 2005 the line appropriated Minor Threat's album art for a tour flyer, drawing a public rebuke from Ian MacKaye and an apology from Nike, a moment that made clear the line was operating inside a community with its own memory. The Dunk survived that and became one of the most collected silhouettes in the world, sitting alongside Air Jordans, Air Force 1s and Air Max models as the shoes that carried Nike from sport into mainstream youth dress from the 1980s onward. A muted grey SB is the version for people who skate them rather than shelf them.
Construction
SB Dunks differ from standard Dunks in the details that a skater feels immediately: a thicker, more heavily padded tongue, extra cushioning around the collar, and Zoom Air style insole cushioning for impact, all built on the same low cut panelled upper and flat cupsole. Zoom is the low profile responsive member of the Nike Air family, the pressurised gas cushioning platform that became the company's core technology. The outsole is where the oldest piece of Nike engineering lives: the waffle tread Bowerman created by pouring rubber into a waffle iron established the principle of cutting a rubber surface so it grips in multiple directions, which is what board feel depends on. In dark grey, the padding reads as bulk rather than decoration.
