Designed by Peter Moore and released on 12 August 2021 as part of Nike's Dunk line. This release has a leather upper in Sail/White/Seaglass/Seafoam. Scrap is Nike being honest about where a shoe comes from. The format builds the upper from offcuts and surplus material, so the panels do not match by design and no two pairs are guaranteed to be identical. Sea Glass names the palette after something the sea has already worn down and returned, which is the same idea expressed in colour: pale, softened, secondhand looking on purpose. Nike Grind, the programme that takes manufacturing scrap and worn shoes back into new product and surfaces, is the industrial policy underneath this. Scrap is what happens when that policy is allowed to show on the outside of the shoe rather than being hidden in a track surface.
Pale mismatched panels want plain, soft clothing around them. Ecru wide leg trousers with a white tee and an oatmeal knit keeps everything in the same register, so the panel differences read as texture rather than as error. For contrast, washed indigo denim with a grey sweatshirt pulls the pale tones forward. Keep them dry: mixed surplus materials react unevenly to water and one panel will mark while its neighbour does not. The last is long and narrow, and half a size down solves it for most. Accept that no two pairs look the same, and do not try to clean them back to uniform, because that is not what they are.
Nike Grind recycles manufacturing scrap and worn product back into new goods and surfaces, and the company has pushed further into materials science through partnerships, including work with Newlight Technologies from 2021 on AirCarbon bioplastic. Most of that work is invisible by design, buried in a midsole or a court surface. Scrap inverts it and makes the offcut the aesthetic, which is a genuinely different argument to the one Nike normally makes about performance. It also sits oddly and interestingly alongside a company whose signature technologies, from the waffle sole to ZoomX, have always been about adding rather than reusing.
A Dunk Low assembled from mixed surplus materials, which means the panels will differ in texture, weight and sometimes finish across a single pair, over the usual padded collar, foam sockliner and rubber cupsole. Treat every panel individually: dry brush anything napped, damp wipe anything smooth, and leave textile sections alone unless they need attention. Pale sea glass tones give you no dark panel to hide marks in, so protect before first wear and clean the same day rather than the same week. Underfoot nothing changes: flat, firm, close to the ground, with the crease pattern setting early across the vamp and holding.
