Released on 8 June 2023 and part of the Challenger ATR 7 line. This release has a mesh upper in Black/Black. The Challenger line is Hoka's all terrain runner, the shoe built to leave a pavement start line and finish on dirt without changing footwear. That dual brief traces straight back to Annecy, where the founders were mountain runners first and built oversized cushion because it let them attack descents. The seventh version in triple black is the most restrained way the model has ever been shown. Where Hoka usually shouts through colour blocking, this pair collapses the entire shoe into one tone, which flattens the visual bulk of the stack and turns a trail capable runner into something you can wear to work. Black on black is how a technical shoe gets a second life in a city wardrobe.
Two ways to use it. First, gravel and park loops: black shorts or tights, a light shell tied at the waist, and no second thought about whether the ground turns soft. Second, city black: black wide leg trousers or dark denim, a black overshirt, and the shoe passes as a chunky sneaker rather than a trail tool. It handles fire roads, canal paths, gym to street commutes and long airport days. Fit true to size, and if you are heading somewhere genuinely loose, lace snug through the midfoot so your foot does not slide forward on descents. Brush the lugs out after off road use, avoid hot water, and let it dry fully before the next outing.
Trail is where Hoka became credible. The cushioning advantage on long mountain descents made the brand a mainstay at ultra races before road runners caught on, and the company now puts its name on UTMB as title sponsor. Jim Walmsley, signed after his 2016 Western States run, is the athlete who anchors that story, a multiple Western States champion and in 2023 the first American man to win UTMB. A Challenger is the everyday inheritance of that racing lineage. Triple black also plugs into the later fashion wave, when the maximal silhouette became the running world's version of the chunky sneaker and Hoka started working with partners like Brain Dead and BEAMS.
The point of an all terrain build is a tread that bites on loose ground without feeling like studs on tarmac, and a midsole deep enough to take the sting out of both. Hoka's house geometry, a low heel to toe drop paired with a rounded sole, keeps you rolling forward on mixed surfaces where your cadence keeps changing. The heel sits cradled inside the midsole walls rather than balanced on top, which is where the brand's stability comes from instead of stiff structure. In all black, mud and trail dust hide well, which is a genuine practical advantage. Knock the outsole clean while it is still damp, rinse grit out of the lugs, and let the shoe dry in shade so the foam holds its shape.
