Released on 8 June 2023 and part of the Challenger ATR 7 line. This release has a mesh upper in Castlerock/Flame. Castlerock with Flame is the grey-and-ember version of Hoka's most flexible shoe, and the pairing is a good summary of what the Challenger is for. Castlerock is the colour of the ground you run on when the weather is bad, Flame is the colour of something that wants to be seen doing it. The model itself descends from the reason the brand exists, an oversized cushioned platform built in Annecy in 2009 so two trail runners could attack descents rather than survive them. Seven versions later it is the pair people buy when their weekly routes refuse to stay on one surface.
Two ways to run it. Mixed terrain: Castlerock and Flame Challenger 7 with a fitted short and a light top for routes that mix road, path and gravel, especially in poor weather where the grey will not look ruined by the end. Everyday: grey or black trousers and an olive jacket, with the Flame accent doing the work a bright sock usually would. Fit true to length, lace the midfoot firmly, and keep it off genuinely technical mountain ground. Let mud dry then brush it off, spot clean with mild soap, remove the insole to dry, and never put it in a machine.
Hoka is a fixture in ultrarunning, and it built that position by sponsoring the people who live in it. Mike Wardian is one of the sponsored ultrarunning athletes on the roster, and Jim Walmsley is the defining one, a multiple Western States champion who in 2023 became the first American man to win UTMB with a course record. The brand later became title sponsor of UTMB. None of that happens on a Challenger, but all of it is why a Challenger is trusted. The model is where a company that made its name on hundred mile mountain races meets the runner doing forty minutes through a park.
This is a hybrid build and every part of it is a negotiation. The stack follows the founding low weight to cushion ratio so the shoe stays quick enough for tarmac, while the outsole pattern grips packed dirt and gravel without becoming uncomfortable on hard ground. Hoka's rocker geometry keeps the roll consistent across both, and the sidewall that sinks the heel into the midsole steadies you when the surface tilts. The upper balances airflow against protection, breathable through the panels with reinforcement at the toe. The grey body will take dirt without showing it, while the Flame accents keep the shoe visible in low light and heavy weather.
