Origin
Released on 13 March 2024 and part of the Stinson 7 line. This release has a mesh upper in Olive Haze/Forest Cover. Olive Haze with Forest Cover is the Challenger 7 in full camouflage, two greens that belong to the ground the shoe is designed for. The Challenger is Hoka's all terrain runner, built to leave the road and keep moving, which makes it the most direct everyday descendant of the founding work in Annecy, where two ex Salomon mountain runners built oversized cushioning so they could attack descents. Green on green suits it in a way bright colours do not. The exaggerated sidewall stack, which usually announces itself, settles into something closer to hiking equipment here, and the shoe reads as gear rather than as a statement.
Utility
Recipe one, trail and hike: olive or black shorts, a technical tee, a light pack, and the shoe blends into the landscape rather than fighting it. Recipe two, casual outdoors: khaki or brown chinos with a cream knit and a field jacket, where the greens read as heritage outdoor rather than sports. Use it for gravel, forest paths, hill walking, travel days and dog walks in rough weather. Fit true to size and tighten the midfoot before descents so your toes stay off the front. Clean the outsole after off road use, avoid hot water on the upper, and let it dry fully before the next outing.
Influence
Trail is Hoka's home ground and the place its claims were tested. The cushioning advantage on long mountain descents made the brand a fixture at races like Western States and UTMB, and it later became UTMB's title sponsor. Mike Wardian runs as one of the brand's sponsored ultrarunning athletes, and Jim Walmsley, signed after his 2016 Western States run, is a multiple champion there who in 2023 became the first American man to win UTMB with a course record. Earth toned trail shoes are what that world actually looks like away from the finish line photographs, worn for long unglamorous hours on paths nobody is filming.
Construction
The all terrain brief forces a compromise and the whole build reflects it: a tread that holds loose ground without feeling harsh on tarmac, under a midsole deep enough to take the edge off both. Hoka's house geometry, a low heel to toe drop with a rounded sole, keeps you rolling forward through terrain that never lets you settle into one rhythm. The heel sits inside the midsole walls rather than on top, which is how the shoe stays steady on uneven ground without becoming rigid. Olive tones hide trail dust and dried mud better than almost anything else in the range. Still rinse the lugs while the mud is soft, brush the upper, and dry in shade.
