Released on 1 May 2023 and part of Hoka's Clifton 9 line. This release has a knit upper in Coastal Sky/All Aboard. Coastal Sky is a soft, washed blue, and on the ninth Clifton it lands on the generation that a lot of runners still name as their favourite. The Clifton is the shoe that converted people who thought the whole idea was ridiculous. When Hoka arrived in 2009 the industry was chasing minimal and barefoot style shoes, and the brand went the opposite way with midsoles two to three times thicker than normal, a stance the press labelled maximalist. The Clifton is where that argument stopped being theoretical, because it was cushioned and light at the same time, and people who tried it stopped laughing.
Two ways. Daily running: Coastal Sky Clifton 9 with black shorts and a plain technical top for easy, steady and long runs, the range this trainer covers best. Casual: light grey sweatpants or washed denim with a white tee, where the pale blue keeps everything soft rather than sporty. Fit true to length with a standard toe box, and keep a firmer pair for speed sessions so the cushioning lasts. A pale upper needs upkeep, so brush dry dirt off before it embeds, spot clean with mild soap and a soft cloth, remove the insole to dry, and avoid machines and heat.
Hoka's early history is almost implausibly small scale. The brand reached the United States in 2010 only because Mark Plaatjes and Johnny Halberstaadt of Boulder Running Company bought the entire initial production run of six hundred pairs, and it stayed a specialist item until Deckers Brands acquired it on 1 April 2013 and distribution finally scaled. The Clifton is the model that met the mainstream at the other end of that, the light cushioned trainer people recommended to each other in run clubs and, later, on hospital floors. A soft blue version is what a shoe looks like once it no longer needs to prove anything.
The Clifton is defined by what it leaves out. The upper is thin, breathable engineered mesh with minimal overlays, so the weight budget goes into the midsole in service of the low weight to cushion ratio the brand was founded on. Hoka's rocker geometry rolls the foot through the stride instead of demanding a push off a flat platform, and the sidewall that sinks the heel into the midsole provides stability without a stiff medial post. The heel flares wide to broaden the landing zone. Coastal Sky runs a pale washed blue across the upper with light midsole tones, a combination that looks clean and marks easily in equal measure.
