Released on 1 May 2023 and part of Hoka's Clifton 9 line. This release has a knit upper in Harbor Mist/Black. Harbor Mist with black is a colourway built on contrast rather than volume, which suits the Clifton, the lightest argument in Hoka's cushioning case. A pale sea grey upper against black detailing gives the ninth generation a sharper outline than a blacked out pair, and it also connects to something in the brand's own history. Hoka takes its name from a Maori phrase meaning to fly, and the company shortened it from Hoka One One to Hoka on 22 December 2021, saying the shorter name was easier on the lips. A light, cool, airy colourway is the closest a shoe gets to that idea.
Two ways to wear it. First, on the road: daily easy running and steady efforts, thin technical socks, kept off trail so the light upper survives. Second, in the city: navy or black straight trousers cropped at the ankle, a white tee, a grey overshirt, the pale upper lifting the outfit while the black trim keeps it grounded. This colourway works best in dry weather and looks tired fast in wet grass. Pre treat the upper before first wear, brush after each outing, clean with mild soap and cold water, and air dry only, since heat will yellow a light midsole permanently.
Hoka went mainstream through three separate audiences, and the Clifton was the crossover shoe for all of them. Ultrarunners at Western States and UTMB proved the cushioning had a competitive edge. Healthcare staff working twelve hour shifts made the road models an occupational standard. Fashion arrived last, reading the maximal silhouette as running's answer to the chunky sneaker, and outside partners started reworking the model, from Outdoor Voices on the Clifton 4 to Satisfy Running's trail ready Clifton LS. A soft grey pair with black trim sits comfortably in any of those rooms without committing to one.
The value of a two tone treatment on a maximal shoe is that it separates the upper from the platform, so the eye reads two components rather than one slab. That makes the geometry legible: a midsole tuned to a low weight to cushion ratio, a heel that flares out to widen the base, and a sidewall that sinks the heel into the foam rather than balancing it above. Rocker profiles across the line pair a low heel to toe drop with a rounded sole to roll the stride through. Pale grey uppers show road film and salt quickly, so brush the mesh after dry runs and clean marks before they set.
