Designed by Peter Moore and released on 7 July 2022 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in Pure Platinum/White/Citron Tint. Lemonade is a pale, chalky yellow, and it belongs to the women's Low run that has become one of the most productive corners of the whole line. The shoe underneath is unchanged from the pattern Peter Moore and Bruce Kilgore set before the first public release on 1 April 1985, but the reason a soft yellow version exists is commercial history: the original sold out at 50,000 pairs and passed 150 million dollars when Nike had planned for 3 million over three years. That kind of surplus buys decades of experimentation. Cut low, in a colour nobody could have played in, this is the silhouette as summer clothing.
Two recipes. Summer bright: white shorts or a white skirt with a pale blue shirt, the yellow reading as warmth rather than as a highlight. Or ground it: mid blue denim with a white tee and a navy layer, where the shoe is the only soft colour in the outfit. Yellow fights orange and red, so avoid both. Keep the hem at the ankle to show the low collar. Sizing is close to true on the women's last. Spray protect before first wear, clean gently and often rather than heavily and rarely, and store out of sunlight since pale yellow shifts noticeably.
J Balvin is among Jordan Brand's artist collaborators, part of a music side roster that also includes Drake, Billie Eilish, Eminem and Nicki Minaj, and that group is a decent map of where the shoe now lives. It went from a basketball contract in 1984 to a hip hop reference point to a piece of pop wardrobe that crosses languages and genres. A colour like lemonade only makes sense at that third stage, when the shape is so widely understood that the palette is free to go anywhere. Nothing about this pair signals sport, and nothing needs to.
Leather panels in lemonade yellow with a lighter base, a low collar and the standard stitched rubber cupsole. Pale yellow is one of the least forgiving finishes this shoe offers, since it shows scuffing, dye transfer and dirt earlier than almost any other tone, and the toe box crease will be visible within a few wears. That is the cost of the colour and it is worth knowing before you buy rather than after. The flat, wide platform underneath is the same one every Air Jordan 1 stands on: firm, stable, made for standing and walking rather than for cushioning a run.
