Designed by Peter Moore and released on 20 August 2024 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a suede upper in Legend Light Brown/Sail/Neutral Grey/Archaeo Brown. Sail and Archaeo Brown is the Jordan 1 speaking in furniture tones. There is no team here, no championship, no red at all: just an off white base and a muted brown that sits closer to leather goods than to sportswear. Special Edition versions of the Low exist to make exactly this argument, that the pattern Peter Moore drew with Bruce Kilgore in 1984 works as a wardrobe object independent of everything the brand attached to it afterwards. Cut below the ankle and finished in neutrals, the shoe stops referencing basketball altogether and starts behaving like a well chosen everyday shoe, which is a strange and quite recent thing for this silhouette to be able to do.
Wear it with cream or oatmeal trousers and a brown knit for a full tonal outfit, or with light indigo denim and a white shirt when you want the brown to act as the only accent. It suits linen in summer and wool in autumn, which is unusual for a Jordan. The low cut works with cropped hems. Take your usual Jordan 1 size. Apply a protector to the sail panels before first wear, brush rather than scrub, expect and accept gradual patina on the off white, and keep them out of rain so the brown does not bleed onto the pale sections.
The neutral end of the Jordan 1 range exists because the model outgrew its own audience. What began as basketball equipment now sells to people buying a shape rather than a story, which is only possible because the shape itself became famous first, through hip hop references, through advertising directed by Spike Lee with Lee playing Mars Blackmon opposite Jordan, and through sneaker collecting becoming a mass activity. Neutral colourways are what happens when a design is so widely recognised that it no longer needs colour to identify itself. They tend to be the pairs people actually wear out.
The Low SE uses the standard Jordan 1 Low pattern with blocked panels across the toe, quarter and eyestay, a stitched Swoosh, a padded low collar and a rubber outsole with the forefoot pivot circle. Special Edition make ups usually shift materials and stitching rather than the last, so the fit stays familiar: flat through the forefoot, snug through the midfoot, firm underfoot for the first week. Sail is an off white rather than a bright white, which means it will not stay pristine and is not meant to, but it also means dirt reads as ageing rather than as damage. Brown panels hide scuffing better than the sail sections do.
