Designed by Peter Moore and released on 17 June 2021 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in Sesame/White/Flash Crimson/Psychic Blue. Sesame is a warm, sandy neutral, and it is the sort of tone the line only reaches for once it has nothing left to prove. The Air Jordan started as a corrective: Nike was losing basketball to Converse and adidas in 1984 and signed a rookie rather than a superstar to buy itself a face. Forty years on, the shape is so established that a colourway can be named after a seed and still sell. This is the Mid, the cut that gives you a padded collar without the ceremony of the High, wrapped in a tone that sits closer to a desert boot than to a basketball shoe.
Two recipes. Warm on warm: brown or tobacco chinos, a cream knit, and the sesame shoe closing a full earth palette. Or cut it cold: black straight jeans with a charcoal crew, where the sandy tone is the only warmth in the outfit and lifts the whole thing. Mids want a cuff above the collar so the padding shows. Sizing is close to true, half up for wide feet. Protect before first wear, since neutrals stain rather than scuff, brush dry dirt off before it soaks in, and keep them away from wet grass and dark denim. A cream or ecru sock keeps the warm palette unbroken at the ankle.
Drake sits among Jordan Brand's artist collaborators, alongside a design roster that includes KAWS and Comme des Garcons, and the muted end of the catalogue owes a lot to that company. When the collaborators are artists and fashion houses rather than teams, the natural direction of travel is towards tone, texture and restraint. A sesame Mid is the house version of that instinct, no partner logo, no graphic, just a neutral that lets the outline speak. It is the Air Jordan 1 dressed for a room where nobody is going to comment on it, which is its own kind of confidence.
Leather and leather look panels in sesame over a lighter base, a padded mid height collar, and the stitched rubber cupsole. Warm neutrals expose construction more than colour blocking does, so the panel seams, the Swoosh stitching and the perforation on the toe carry the visual interest here. Sandy tones also age in a particular way: they do not so much get dirty as get darker at the flex points, which some wearers like and some do not. Nothing about the build is technical. It is flat leather over rubber, cut in proportions that have been correct since the first pattern.
