J Balvin is one of the artist collaborators Jordan Brand works with, and this release puts him on the Air Jordan 3, which is not a neutral choice of model. The 3 is Tinker Hatfield's first shoe for the line, the one that introduced the elephant print and moved the Jumpman onto the tongue, and it is where the series became a design programme rather than a single athlete's shoe. Medellin Sunset is a colour brief rather than a colourway name: warm graded tones, the sort of light a city gets in the last hour of the day. Applied to a model whose signature is a grey cracked pattern, it forces the print to sit inside a palette it was never designed for.
Recipe one: cream linen trousers with a burnt orange short sleeve shirt, letting the outfit sit inside the same sunset gradient as the shoe. Recipe two: black denim with a plain white tee and a tan suede jacket, where the shoe is the only colour and everything else stays out of its way. This is a warm weather and evening shoe, better on dry pavement than in rain given the printed panels. The 3 generally fits true with a roomy forefoot. Keep printed surfaces out of prolonged sun, clean with a damp cloth and mild soap rather than solvents, avoid brushes on graphics, and store cool and dry, since ageing midsole materials degrade over time.
The brand's music partnerships run through Travis Scott's Cactus Jack releases on the 1, 4 and 6 and include Drake, Billie Eilish, J Balvin, Eminem and Nicki Minaj, which is a roster no other sportswear line has assembled around one silhouette family. It sits on a foundation built by hip hop in the 1980s and 1990s, when 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z referenced Jordan and his sneakers. A Latin music collaborator on the 3 extends that logic to a different audience while using exactly the same mechanism: the shoe as a shared reference that does not need explaining.
The 3 puts its elephant print panels at the toe and heel, where they take the abrasion, which means any colour or graphic treatment has to survive the parts of the shoe that scuff first. Nike Air cushioning, in the line since the Air Jordan 2, sits in the midsole, and a rubber outsole handles grip. A graded warm palette across a panelled upper is technically demanding because each cut piece has to line up tonally with its neighbours, and the visual effect depends on those transitions staying clean as the shoe creases. The 3 fits wider than an Air Jordan 1 and is comfortable early. Coloured and printed panels fade in sun faster than plain leather.
