Part of the Jordan Break Slide line. This release has a leather upper in University Red/Metallic Silver. University Red with Metallic Silver on a Break Slide is the brand's house palette stripped down to its two loudest elements and dropped onto its simplest product. Red is not a styling choice for Jordan: the Chicago red, black and white palette functions as a brand colour in itself, alongside the number 23, so a red slide with a silver Jumpman is legible from across a pool deck. The Break line is the everyday end of the catalogue, the kind of product that only exists because the line became Jordan Brand in 1997, a full Nike division with apparel and accessories rather than a single basketball model per season.
Recipe one: gym and pool, black shorts, a plain white or grey tee, bare feet, and the red does the only talking. Recipe two: summer street, cream or sand shorts, a boxy printed shirt, and a white ribbed sock, since red and cream is a far better pairing than red and black in daylight. Do not walk long distances in a flat slide. Rinse them after chlorine and salt water, both of which age foam faster than daily wear, wipe the metallic detail with a soft cloth rather than a brush, and dry them in shade so the red keeps its saturation.
Red is the colour the brand paid for. Nike signed Jordan in October 1984, gave him a royalty on sales in a deal worth about three times any other in the league, and then built the Banned advertising around the NBA's rule that shoes had to be at least 51 percent white. Paying the fine rather than redesigning taught the sneaker market that transgression sells, and it permanently coded loud red as the Jordan position. Decades later the colour still does the work on a product with no logo placement to spare, which is what a brand colour is supposed to do.
A slide is a moulded strap and a moulded footbed, and that is the whole shoe. There is nothing to break in, nothing to lace, and nothing to fail except the foam under you, which compresses gradually with use. The metallic silver detail is a surface treatment, so it will scratch and dull before the red base shows any wear. Red foam is prone to visible fading in strong sun over a season, so store them out of the light rather than on a balcony. Judge fit by whether the strap crosses the widest part of your foot rather than sitting on the toes, and by whether your heel lands inside the back edge.
