Culture Note™
Designed by Ben Nethongkome and released on 10 June 2022 as part of the Kyrie Infinity line. This release has a mesh upper in Rattan/Madder Root/Marina/Hemp. The Kyrie Infinity is a modern basketball signature model, and the EP suffix marks the engineered performance build made for hardwood use outside the US, which is the version most players in Asia and Europe actually buy. Floral is the make up: a printed upper on a shoe otherwise engineered around guard play, quick direction changes, low centre of gravity, aggressive traction. Nike has been building signature basketball franchises since the Michael Jordan signing in 1984 turned one athlete's shoe into a business of its own, and the modern signature line is that model repeated: performance first, then a print that gives the pair a personality on court.
Two uses. On court, wear with proper cushioned basketball socks and lace tight through the top eyelet, since the fit and the traction only work when your foot is locked over the platform. Off court, wear with tapered black joggers and a plain tee so the floral print reads as the deliberate detail rather than sportswear noise. Keep an indoor pair indoors: outdoor concrete destroys court rubber quickly and takes the traction with it. Wipe the outsole with a damp cloth before playing so dust does not kill grip, brush the printed upper gently, and let them dry fully between sessions to protect the cushioning and the shape.
Nike is the official on court uniform supplier to the NBA, WNBA and G League, a relationship running since 2017 under a deal extended for a further twelve years, so its signature models sit inside the sport's visual identity rather than beside it. That authority traces back to 1984 and the Spike Lee directed Mars Blackmon advertising that made Nike the shoe of basketball and, through it, of hip hop. Print make ups exist because basketball has always been a fashion league, where what you wear on court is read as a statement in the same breath as how you play.
A guard's shoe: a low, wide platform for stability during hard cuts, a textile and synthetic upper for containment without weight, and Nike Air cushioning sealed into the midsole, the pressurised gas unit that has underpinned Nike performance shoes since the 1980s. EP builds are tuned for indoor court use, which usually means a more durable outsole rubber and traction pattern than the standard release. The floral print sits across the upper as a graphic layer rather than a change in build, so the shoe plays exactly as it looks on paper. Fit is snug by design, since a basketball shoe that lets the foot slide is a basketball shoe that fails.
