Released on 1 August 2025 and part of the 1000 line. This release has a mesh upper in Mushroom/Shipyard/Sea Salt. New Balance numbers its shoes the way an engineer would, higher figure for higher specification, and the 1000 sits at the top of that scale. It belongs to the era after the 990 had established in 1982 that a running shoe could be a premium object, when the company kept pushing the ceiling instead of chasing volume. Mushroom is the colour that suits it best: a soft fungal beige, warm where New Balance greys are cold, quiet enough that you have to get close to see how much shoe is actually there. That combination of maximum engineering and minimum announcement is the most New Balance thing a model can do.
Mushroom is a warm neutral, which means it plays with brown and cream and fights hard blacks. First recipe: taupe pleated trousers with an oatmeal knit and a brown suede jacket, letting everything sit within a few shades of each other. Second: faded blue denim with a cream heavy tee, where the beige upper keeps the fit soft rather than sharp. Good for dry city days and long walking, poor in rain and hopeless on wet clay. Sizing is true to length and the width options are the right fix for a broad foot. Protect the suede before first wear, brush the nap in one direction, and clean the midsole immediately, because pale foam takes a stain permanently.
New Balance built its reputation on things competitors gave up: domestic manufacturing and technical fit. The Made in USA and Made in UK lines, the latter running out of the Flimby factory since 1991 after starting at Workington in 1982, are used as product signatures in their own right and stamped on tongue badges, and they are the reason the brand prices above its rivals. That premium engineering identity is exactly what normcore and then high fashion reclaimed in the 2010s, when the plainness of a beige technical runner stopped being a compromise and became a design position. A model at the top of the numbering system, in a colour named after a fungus, is that whole argument in one shoe.
Suede and mesh worked in tonal mushroom across the whole upper, so the panel count reads as texture rather than as a colour diagram, with the block N sitting close in tone to the wall behind it. The layering on a shoe from this part of the range is dense: overlays wrap the midfoot for hold, mesh opens through the forefoot for air, and the heel is built up rather than soft. Underneath is a substantial cushioned platform, the kind of midsole New Balance uses to justify a premium price rather than to save weight. Multiple width fittings, the promise the company carried over from its arch support origins in 1906, are the correct way to fit a structured upper like this one.
