Released on 1 March 2024 and part of New Balance's 1906 line. This release has a mesh upper in Phantom/New Spruce/Tamarind. Phantom is a soft, dusty grey and New Spruce is a deep muted green, and together they give the 1906R the look of technical kit left out in the weather. The model's number reaches back to 1906, when William J Riley founded the New Balance Arch Support Company outside Boston, but the shoe itself belongs to the brand's engineered running era, when uppers were assembled in visible layers and support was shown rather than concealed. Green is a rare choice on this silhouette and it works because it grounds the shape. Instead of reading as chrome and speed, the shoe reads as field equipment, which is a more interesting place for a running model to end up.
Green and grey is a quiet combination that rewards texture. Recipe one: grey sweatpants with an olive or spruce crewneck, matching the accent once so the outfit looks composed rather than accidental. Recipe two: black jeans with a cream knit and a khaki jacket, letting the shoe tie the warm and cold halves together. Do not add more green below the waist. On a running last, lace through the top eyelet if your heel lifts, and use the width fittings if the overlays press on the midfoot. Clean the mesh with foam cleaner and a soft brush, and treat any suede or nubuck sections with a protector spray before the first wear.
New Balance is not only a running company any more. It entered global football through its acquisition of Warrior Sports in 2015 and now supplies clubs including FC Porto from 2014, Lille from 2016, Dynamo Kyiv from 2018, FC Tokyo from 2021 and Sao Paulo from 2024, which is how a Boston fit specialist ended up on pitches across four continents. Muted green and grey belongs to that world more than to the American dad shoe story the brand is better known for. It is a colourway for the part of New Balance that turns up on training grounds, and it gives the 1906R a European, sporting register rather than a fashion one.
Mesh underlays sit beneath structured overlays, phantom grey covering the bulk of the upper while spruce green picks out the panels that shape the midfoot and heel. Because the model's support structure doubles as its colour blocking, a two tone treatment like this makes the engineering legible rather than decorative. ABZORB does the cushioning, New Balance's proprietary foam and rubber polymer blend built to disperse heel strike impact before it travels into the knees and hips, a softer and lighter approach than ENCAP, the moulded polyurethane rim around an EVA core introduced with the 995 in 1986. Width fittings apply across the range and matter on a technical last, where a wide foot in a standard width will feel the overlays.
