Released on 15 January 2025 and part of New Balance's 2002R line. This release has a suede upper in Dream State/Ice Wine/Sea Stone. New Balance began in 1906 near Boston as the New Balance Arch Support Company, a business built on arch supports rather than shoes, and that fit first logic is still the reason the brand runs an archive this deep. The 2002R belongs to the modern half of that archive, a running shape pulled back into the lifestyle line and re-cut for people who never intended to race in it. Dream State is a colourway that leans into that softness, a hazed, low contrast reading of a shoe that started life as a technical runner. You are buying the quieter side of New Balance here, the side that made grey suburban running shoes a design position rather than a compromise, and letting the palette do the talking instead of a logo.
Dream State's soft palette wants soft company. Run it with washed indigo denim, a cream crewneck and an unstructured overshirt for a weekend that photographs well without effort. For the second recipe, go tonal: grey wide leg trousers, a heather tee and a light nylon jacket, letting the shoe blur into the outfit rather than punctuate it. This is a walking and standing shoe, best for travel days, long errands and studio hours, less suited to rain or mud given the panelled upper. Try the width fittings before you settle on a size, since the brand builds around foot shape. Brush suede and mesh dry, use a soft eraser on scuffs, keep them out of the washing machine and let them air dry away from direct heat.
New Balance's cultural life has been mostly accidental, which is exactly the point of it. The 990 family turned the plain grey running shoe into the archetypal American dad shoe, worn for comfort rather than status, and normcore then high fashion reclaimed that plainness in the 2010s. The 2002R sits downstream of that reclamation: a technical runner that gets worn because it looks unbothered. Since Aime Leon Dore founder Teddy Santis was appointed creative director of Made in USA in April 2021, the brand has formalised what its wearers already did, treating the archive as a fashion line. A muted colourway like Dream State is the clearest expression of that idea, style carried by tone rather than by shouting.
The 2002R reads as a layered retro runner: a panelled upper stacked over a sculpted midsole, with the block N riding the side wall as the house mark. New Balance's cushioning toolkit for this kind of shoe is well defined, ENCAP wrapping a soft EVA core in a moulded polyurethane rim so structure and shock absorption arrive together, and ABZORB working the other way as a foam and rubber polymer blend that disperses heel strike before it reaches your knees. Multiple width fittings are the brand's oldest technical promise, inherited straight from the arch support years, so sizing here is about the shape of your foot as much as its length. Expect a shoe engineered to be stood in all day, not one built light.
