Released on 1 July 2023 and part of New Balance's 2002R line. This release has a suede upper in Eclipse/Raincloud/Graphite. Eclipse Raincloud is the 2002R in weather. The 2002 was a top tier New Balance runner from the period when the brand's technical shoes were engineered with real ambition, and the 2002R put that shape back on the street. This colourway names two greys against each other, a dark eclipse and a soft raincloud, which is about as literal a use of the brand's own palette as you can make. Grey is not a default at New Balance, it is the house colour, the shade the 990 family used to become the archetypal American dad shoe. Running two greys against each other is a way of saying the shoe needs no accent to be interesting.
Stay tonal: grey wide leg trousers, a heather tee, a charcoal overshirt, so the two greys in the shoe sit inside a family rather than standing out. The second recipe goes for contrast, black tapered trousers and a black knit, where the raincloud grey becomes the only lift in the outfit. This is a long day walking shoe and a strong travel option, not a gym shoe. Grey dulls rather than stains, so it survives real use, but brush the suede regularly to keep the two tones separate. Protect the mesh before the wet season, dry away from direct heat, and clean the midsole with mild soap.
Two tone grey is the most New Balance thing a shoe can do. The 990 family made the plain grey running shoe the archetypal American dad shoe, chosen for comfort rather than status, with documented wearers including Steve Jobs, Ben Affleck, Jennifer Garner and Hilary Duff. Normcore and then high fashion reclaimed that plainness through the 2010s and turned grey suede into a stated design position, at which point a shoe like the 2002R could be released in nothing but greys and be understood as fashion rather than as a lack of imagination. The brand's culture has always been made by wearers rather than campaigns, and this colourway trusts that entirely.
The upper is the standard 2002R layering of engineered mesh with suede and synthetic overlays, with the darker eclipse tone anchoring the base and the lighter raincloud grey lifting the overlays so the panel structure reads clearly rather than disappearing. Underfoot New Balance uses ABZORB, its proprietary foam and rubber polymer blend that disperses heel strike impact before it travels up into the knees and hips, plusher and lighter than ENCAP and less structurally supportive, which makes this a soft street shoe rather than a stability runner. A segmented rubber outsole handles flex and grip. Multiple width fittings are New Balance's oldest technical promise, so buy the width your foot actually needs rather than adding length.
