Released on 22 May 2025 and part of the 2010 line. This release has a suede upper in Arid Stone/Raincloud/Calcium. Grey Day is New Balance celebrating the one colour it genuinely owns, and putting it on the 2010 sends the idea back to the technical end of the archive rather than to the obvious 99x heroes. Grey became this brand's signature by accident: the 990 family, launched in 1982 after being conceived in 1978, turned the grey suburban running shoe into an American default, worn for comfort rather than status, and everything since has been read through that. The 2010 is a deep archive runner, layered and substantial, and dressing it in the house colour is a way of making the point without leaning on the 990 itself. The code is U2010GD.
Two recipes. Full grey is the move: charcoal wide leg trousers, a grey marl crewneck and a lighter grey overshirt, letting the shoe be the most textured element in a single colour outfit. Or navy straight leg denim with a black knit for the version where the grey acts purely as a neutral. It works for walking, commuting, travel and casual offices, and it is one of the easiest colourways to wear daily. Buy true to length and use the width fittings if the midfoot feels tight. Brush the upper dry, spot clean rather than soaking, keep the midsole clean since grey shoes look tired when the foam yellows, and rotate to let the cushioning recover.
Grey is the whole story here. The 990 family became the archetypal American dad shoe, favoured by Steve Jobs and later worn by Ben Affleck, Jennifer Garner and Hilary Duff, and its plainness was exactly what normcore and then high fashion reclaimed in the 2010s, turning grey suede into a design position rather than a default. A grey themed release is the brand acknowledging that it was adopted rather than that it campaigned. It is also a reminder of where the authority came from, running clubs and comfort buyers, not endorsement deals, since this company has stayed privately held under Jim Davis since 1972.
Tonal grey is the hardest colourway to build and the most rewarding when it works, because with no contrast to organise the shoe, texture becomes the only information. That is why the 2010 suits it: the upper stacks mesh against overlays, the side wall is sculpted, and the midsole has enough shaping to separate light and shadow, so several greys emerge from what looks like one at a distance. Underneath, this house has split structure from shock absorption since ENCAP arrived with the 995 in 1986, wrapping a soft foam core in a polyurethane rim, and its newer foams keep that logic, with Fresh Foam moulded as a single piece and tuned zonally. Expect substance and stability rather than lightness.
