Released on 27 September 2022 and part of New Balance's 327 line. This release has a suede upper in Natural Indigo/White. Natural Indigo puts the 327 into a dye tradition rather than a sportswear palette, and that is a smart use of a shoe built on graphic proportion. The 327 exaggerates archive running shapes and runs the block N large across the side wall, so it needs a colour with some depth to stop it reading as pure logo. Indigo delivers that: a blue that behaves like a fabric rather than a paint, one that reads differently in shadow than in sun. New Balance came out of a 1906 arch support business and has spent its life making functional objects, so a workwear dye reference sits comfortably on one of its shoes.
Indigo asks for natural fabrics. Recipe one: ecru or off white wide leg trousers, a white tee and an unlined chore jacket, a workwear leaning outfit where the shoe supplies the only blue. Recipe two: raw denim with a cuff, a grey sweatshirt and a canvas jacket, a tonal blue build where the indigo shoe deepens the palette rather than matching it exactly. Good for spring and autumn city wear, casual work and travel. Deep dyes can transfer when wet, so keep them out of heavy rain. Check width fittings, brush dry, spot clean gently, and air dry away from direct sun to protect the colour.
The 327 is New Balance designing for the audience it accidentally acquired. That audience arrived when the 990 family became the archetypal American dad shoe, worn for comfort rather than status, and normcore and then high fashion reclaimed the brand's plainness in the 2010s. The company's collaborations have always leaned towards designers rather than mass celebrity, including British designer Paul Smith on a 576 in June 2018, which tells you where its taste sits. An indigo 327 fits that lineage, referencing craft and dye tradition rather than sport, a shoe that reads as considered rather than hyped.
Indigo works because it changes with the surface carrying it. On the 327's mix of panelled sections and mesh the same tone reads deep and saturated in one place and washed in another, which gives an otherwise flat colourway real depth. The oversized block N becomes a shape rather than a badge at this level of contrast. The 327 is a low, light silhouette rather than a cushioned one, so treat it as a walking shoe. New Balance's cushioning systems, ENCAP with a polyurethane rim around an EVA core for structure and low compression set, and ABZORB for softer impact dispersal, describe how the brand thinks about support.
