New Balance 530 Grey Matte

Released on 1 February 2023 and part of New Balance's 530 line. This release has a suede upper in Grey Matter/Harbor Grey. Grey is New Balance's inheritance, and it was earned rather than chosen. The 990 family made muted grey the shade of the American everyday, a running shoe worn for comfort rather than status, favoured by Steve Jobs and worn by Ben Affleck, Jennifer Garner and Hilary Duff, none of them selling anything. The 530 is where that colour reaches everybody. It is a nineties cushioned trainer, built for people logging weekly mileage rather than for photographs, and a matte grey finish is the version that behaves most like the archetype. No shine, no metallic panels, no attempt to be current: just the shape people picture when they picture a running shoe.
