Origin
Released on 30 June 2024 and part of New Balance's 550 line. This release has a leather upper in White/Black/Moonrock. New Balance is a Boston company in the deepest sense, from a founding in 1906 near the city to sponsorships of the Boston Red Sox, and the 550 carries that regional, unfussy character on the basketball side. It is a court silhouette from an older era of the brand, revived because its simplicity aged better than anything designed to look advanced. White Black Moonrock is the sharpest way to present it: a white base, black overlays cutting hard against it, and moonrock, a cool grey, softening the transition between the two. Where an all white 550 disappears into an outfit, this version draws its own outline, which suits a shoe whose appeal has always been the clarity of its panels.
Utility
Outfit one: black tailored trousers with a white shirt and a grey blazer, the shoe supplying the deliberate break in an otherwise formal outfit. Outfit two: mid wash denim, a black tee and a grey zip hoodie, where all three colours in the shoe are answered somewhere above. Both work with a straight or slightly wide leg that just touches the collar. Clean white leather with a damp cloth and mild cleaner, lift midsole scuffs with a foam eraser, and go gently around the black overlays so the finish is not dulled. Unlace properly when removing them to stop the heel collar from collapsing over time.
Influence
New Balance's collaboration programme runs on designers and independents rather than mass celebrity, naming partners such as Aime Leon Dore, whose founder Teddy Santis became creative director of Made in USA in April 2021, and British designer Paul Smith, who worked on a 576 in June 2018. That approach shaped who ended up wearing the 550: a fashion audience rather than a basketball one, styling an old court shoe with tailoring, workwear and vintage sportswear. White, black and moonrock is the graphic version of that shoe, the one that photographs cleanly and still looks correct with the plainest clothes in your wardrobe.
Construction
Basketball design is containment design, a wide flat base and layered overlays that stop the foot travelling off the platform under a hard cut, and the black and moonrock panels here trace exactly those structural lines. That is why the colourway reads as engineering rather than decoration. The high contrast has a practical upside too: black overlays take scuffing far better than white ones, so the pair looks maintained for longer. New Balance's core technology has been fit since it made arch supports rather than shoes, and multiple width fittings remain its oldest promise, which is worth using on a flat court last that can pinch a wider foot at the joint.
