Released on 1 June 2023 and part of New Balance's 550 line. This release has a leather upper in White/Cobalt/Summer Fog. White with cobalt is the most direct colourway a court shoe can wear, a bright saturated blue on a white base, and on the 550 it produces the cleanest possible read of the silhouette. Everything here is legible from a distance: the flat profile, the eyestay, the block N on the side wall, the foxing line at the sole. That plainness is the New Balance instinct in a nutshell. The company began in 1906 near Boston making arch supports rather than shoes, built its name on fit and support instead of styling, and has stayed privately held under Jim Davis since 1972. A white and cobalt court shoe is the version of that instinct that happens to look sharp.
Utility
Two recipes. Mid wash straight leg denim with a white tee and a navy overshirt lets the cobalt pick up the jacket and keeps the blue from stranding. Or grey sweat shorts with a white tee for the summer version, which is the fit this colourway was drawn for. It works for weekends, walking, casual offices and travel, though a white base is a bad idea in the rain. Court lasts sit snug through the midfoot, so use width fittings rather than sizing up. Keep the foxing clean weekly with mild soap and a soft brush, treat scuffs on white the same day, and use a shoe tree or paper to hold the toe box so the crease does not set deep.
Influence
New Balance runs an actual basketball programme, sponsoring the NBA and signing Kawhi Leonard, whose OMN1S signature shoe launched in February 2019, which gives a court silhouette here a credibility that pure nostalgia brands do not have. But the brand's mass appeal comes from somewhere else entirely: the 990 as the American dad shoe, bought for comfort rather than status, and the 2010s reclamation of that plainness by normcore and then high fashion. White and cobalt sits between those two stories. It is bright enough to be a sport shoe and simple enough to be worn by people who have never watched a game.
Construction
White bases are a commitment, and the 550's broad flat panels give a mark nowhere to hide, so buy this knowing the maintenance is part of the deal. What you get in return is contrast: cobalt against white is the highest visual separation in this whole batch, which makes the shoe look crisper and slightly lower than a tonal makeup of the same shape. Wear will concentrate at the toe box crease and along the lateral side wall. Underneath, the house has separated structural support from shock absorption since ENCAP arrived with the 995 in 1986, a polyurethane rim wrapped around a soft foam core, and on a court last that reads as firm and planted rather than cushioned. Expect a snug midfoot.
