Released on 31 October 2023 and part of New Balance's 574 line. This release has a suede upper in Navy/Green. Navy with green is a countryside palette rather than a sports one, and the 574 takes it well because the model was never really a sports shoe in the first place. It was built to be the one silhouette that could do everything, which is how it became New Balance's volume seller, and it runs on ENCAP, the midsole introduced with the 995 in 1986 and still used under the 574 and the 990. Dressed in deep navy with a green accent, it stops referencing running altogether and starts behaving like walking footwear, which is closer to how most people actually use it.
Deep navy with green is the easiest kind of colour to live with, so use it as a year round default. First recipe: olive chinos with a cream knit and a navy jacket, letting the shoe pull both colours together at floor level. Second: dark denim with a grey crew, where the navy reads as an extension of the trouser. It handles walking, commuting and travel, and like all suede it prefers dry ground. Sizing runs true and the width options are the right lever for a broad foot. Protect the suede before first wear, brush the nap in one direction after each few wears, and clean the midsole before dirt works into the tread.
New Balance's running identity has always been amateur first, and it shows in what the brand sponsors: New York Road Runners rather than a stable of famous athletes, a relationship that keeps it anchored to people entering road races on weekends. That thread runs back to the Trackster in 1960, the first running shoe offered in varying widths, which spread through YMCA fitness programmes and college cross country teams at MIT, Tufts and Boston University. The 574 is the everyday inheritor of all of it, a shoe sold in every width and every colour to people who wanted comfort rather than status, which is exactly how the brand's cultural standing was built.
Suede and mesh in the standard 574 arrangement, with navy carrying the base and green used on the overlays and the block N, so the layering is separated by colour without the shoe becoming busy. The suede is the part that ages: it takes a nap, it creases where you flex, and after a season it looks like yours rather than like stock. Beneath it sits ENCAP, a moulded polyurethane rim around a soft EVA core, with the polyurethane supplying structure, durability and low compression set while the EVA absorbs impact. New Balance's multiple width fittings, its founding technical promise from 1906, are the honest correction for a broad foot.
