Released on 8 March 2024 and part of New Balance's 574 line. This release has a suede upper in Blue Laguna/Sea Salt. Blue is the colour the 574 wears most naturally, because it is the colour of a shoe that never wanted attention. This model is the widest door into New Balance, a company that opened in 1906 as the New Balance Arch Support Company and only later became a shoemaker, and the 574 carries that fit first inheritance to the largest possible audience. Where the 99x line built the premium end from 1982 onward, the 574 built the everyday. A straight blue makeup emphasises the shape over the panelling, which is the most honest way to wear it. There is no story of hype attached here, only a shoe that has been quietly correct for decades and priced to be worn out rather than saved.
Blue reads as a neutral once you commit to it. Recipe one: mid wash jeans, a white tee and a navy chore jacket, a working uniform where the shoe simply disappears into the palette. Recipe two: khaki chinos, a striped long sleeve and a grey overshirt for a weekend look with more contrast and no effort. These are for walking, commuting, weekend errands and travel days where comfort outranks everything. Use the width fittings rather than sizing up. Brush suede and textile dry rather than washing, treat stains quickly with a soft eraser, avoid soaking them, keep them away from radiators when drying, and rotate pairs so the ENCAP midsole recovers.
New Balance's cultural position was handed to it rather than engineered. The 990 family became the archetypal American dad shoe, plain and grey and worn for comfort, favoured by Steve Jobs and later by Ben Affleck, Jennifer Garner and Hilary Duff, and normcore then high fashion turned that plainness into a design stance in the 2010s. The 574 is the shoe that spread the same idea across every price point and every high street. In Britain the Made in England 99x models had a parallel life in terrace and casual dressing, another culture the brand did not commission. Blue 574s belong in that lineage of shoes chosen for daily use, not for display.
ENCAP sits under the 574, the midsole New Balance introduced with the 995 in 1986: a moulded polyurethane rim encapsulating a soft EVA core, structure and durability from the outside, shock absorption from the inside, with low compression set so the shoe does not go flat under regular use. That is the practical reason a 574 survives daily wear. Above it, the classic panelled upper and the block N on the side wall. Blue is a forgiving colour on this construction, hiding the wear lines that show instantly on pale suede, and it reads as textile rather than as fashion material. Width fittings are the oldest promise the brand makes, so fit the shoe to your foot shape before worrying about the shade.
