Released on 22 April 2022 and part of New Balance's 574 YURT line. This release has a suede upper in Workwear White/Pink. The 574 is the most widely worn shoe New Balance makes, the model that put the brand on ordinary feet everywhere, and Universal Communication is a Salehe Bembury collaboration that treats that ubiquity as the subject rather than as a problem. Workwear White is the colour, a functional off white that belongs to uniforms rather than to sneakers, and Yurt is the theme the project runs under. The 574 also carries the brand's classic midsole logic, since ENCAP still runs under the 990 and the 574: a moulded polyurethane rim encapsulating a soft EVA core, so structure and shock absorption are handled by different materials. That is the shoe underneath the concept.
Two ways to wear it. Stone or khaki work trousers with a white tee and a chore jacket is the intended register, since a workwear white shoe belongs with workwear cuts. Or grey sweatpants with a cream hoodie for the soft version, where the shoe stays the cleanest thing in the fit. The 574 is a genuine all day walker, so use it for errands, travel and long standing days. Buy true to length and take the width fittings seriously, because this shape is where the brand's fit promise is most obvious. Protector spray from new, brush dust off dry, treat marks immediately, keep the midsole clean, and stay out of wet streets to protect the off white.
New Balance's collaboration list is built on designers and independents rather than mass celebrity, including Aime Leon Dore, whose founder Teddy Santis was appointed creative director of Made in USA in April 2021, British designer Paul Smith on a 576 released in June 2018, and Action Bronson across several models including a 990v6 Baklava. Handing the 574, the brand's most democratic shoe, to a designer is the clearest statement of that policy. The context around it is the accidental one: the 990 becoming the archetypal American dad shoe, and normcore then high fashion reclaiming that plainness in the 2010s until ordinary became the most valuable thing this brand owned.
ENCAP is the honest headline here. Introduced with the 995 in 1986, it is a moulded polyurethane rim encapsulating a soft EVA core, where the polyurethane supplies structure, durability and low compression set while the EVA absorbs shock, so you get stability without the ride going dead. That is why a 574 stays comfortable through long days and holds its shape for years. On top of that platform, the collaboration works through material, texture and colour placement across the upper, and a workwear white makeup keeps all of it visible. Expect a low, stable, broadly cut shoe, expect the width fittings to matter, and expect an off white upper to need real care.
