Released on 7 March 2023 and part of the 610 line. This release has a suede upper in Mindful Grey/Driftwood/Mushroom. New Balance began in 1906 near Boston as the New Balance Arch Support Company, a business built on arch supports and shoe accessories rather than shoes, and the question it answered was orthopaedic: how do you give a working foot the support it does not have on its own. The 610v1 in Mindful Grey Mushroom is that logic in a quiet register. Grey is the brand's native colour, the shade the 990 family made into an American default, and Mushroom warms it just enough to stop the shoe reading as pure gym kit. Nothing here is shouting. The block N on the side wall does the identifying, the code ML610TBE does the record keeping, and the rest is a shoe designed to disappear into a wardrobe and stay there for years.
Two ways to wear it. Straight leg mid wash denim with a cream crew neck and a grey overshirt keeps the whole outfit inside the shoe's own tonal range, which is the most flattering way to run a grey and mushroom pair. Or olive wide leg trousers with a white tee and a brown leather belt, letting the mushroom tone pick up the belt rather than fight it. This is a walking and commuting shoe, not an outfit centrepiece: airport days, long errands, the office that does not care. Buy true to length and use the width fittings rather than sizing up. The reason a plain grey New Balance carries weight is that the brand never engineered the moment. The 990 family drifted into being the archetypal American dad shoe, the suburban running shoe worn for comfort and not for status, favoured by Steve Jobs and later worn by Ben Affleck, Jennifer Garner and Hilary Duff, and that plainness is exactly what normcore and then high fashion picked up and reframed as a design position in the 2010s. Grey stopped being the absence of a decision. Read the colourway first, because it tells you how this one is meant to be handled. Mindful Grey and Mushroom are close in value, which means the shoe reads as one soft mass at distance and only shows its panelling up close, and it also means dirt sits visibly in the lighter mushroom sections. New Balance's oldest technical promise is fit before flash: multiple width fittings, inherited straight from the arch support years, and midsoles built to support the foot rather than simply soften under it. That is the frame to judge this build by. Expect a shoe that holds its shape through long standing days rather than one that collapses into comfort, and expect the upper to soften around your foot instead of stretching out of it.
