New Balance 9060 Linen Dark Juniper

Dark Juniper gives you a green you can treat as a neutral. Recipe one is outdoor adjacent: olive cargo trousers, a cream heavyweight tee, a fleece half zip, so the linen upper picks up the cream and the juniper anchors the bottom half. Recipe two is sharper: black wide leg trousers with a cropped charcoal jacket, letting the pale flax panels break the black up. The shoe carries volume, so it needs trousers with enough width to sit over it and it will overwhelm a slim tapered leg. Wear it for long walking days and travel, not for gym work. Keep the linen tone clean with a soft brush and mild soap, and let the pair dry away from direct sun before rewearing.

The 9060 exists because the culture spent a decade telling New Balance that its old running shoes were the interesting part. The 990 line had already become the American dad shoe, the plain grey comfort choice documented on Steve Jobs, Ben Affleck, Jennifer Garner and Hilary Duff, and normcore turned that plainness into a design position. When Aime Leon Dore founder Teddy Santis was appointed creative director of Made in USA in April 2021, the brand formalised what the audience had done on its own, treating the archive as a fashion line. The 9060 is the loud counterpart to that quiet reissue programme, an archive shape allowed to distort. Earthy colour, as here, keeps it wearable rather than costume.

Linen and Dark Juniper split the shoe by depth rather than by loud contrast, the pale flax carrying the panels and the juniper sinking the base and overlays into shadow. That is the right treatment for a silhouette this sculpted, because the 9060's interest is entirely in its curves and its exaggerated side wall, where the block N sits inside the shaping rather than on top of it. The cushioning logic behind the 99x line is New Balance's own: ENCAP wraps a soft EVA core in a moulded polyurethane rim so support and shock absorption coexist and the midsole resists going flat over time. Expect a substantial shoe with real underfoot volume, and use the width fittings instead of guessing a size up.
