Released on 8 March 2025 and part of New Balance's 9060 line. This release has a suede upper in Reflection/Black/Grey. The 9060 is what happens when New Balance treats its own 99x runners as raw material rather than as sacred objects. The panel lines and midsole language of the archive get swollen and warped into a shape that is unmistakably New Balance and unmistakably not a running shoe. Reflection Black takes that sculpture and drops it into full darkness. Where the grey versions borrow the brand's suburban comfort reputation, the black one removes it, so the only thing left to read is the geometry. It is the 9060 for people who want the silhouette without the normcore reference, and it is the easiest version of the shoe to wear in a city that does not forgive white midsoles.
Utility
Go monochrome: black wide leg trousers with a clean break, a black tee, a grey or black zip up, so the shoe becomes a mass at the bottom of the outfit rather than a detail. The second recipe uses contrast, raw indigo denim with a white shirt, where the black shoe anchors everything and keeps a bright top half from floating. This is a long day walking shoe and a good travel choice, not a gym shoe. Black hides dirt but not dust, so brush the suede panels weekly to keep the depth. Avoid soaking the mesh, dry away from heat, and refresh the black with a suede specific product rather than polish.
Influence
New Balance became culturally significant by accident. The 990 family turned into the archetypal American dad shoe, worn for comfort rather than status, with documented wearers including Steve Jobs, Ben Affleck, Jennifer Garner and Hilary Duff, and normcore then high fashion converted that plainness into a design position through the 2010s. The 9060 is the shape that argument produced once the brand felt confident enough to distort its own archive. In black it stops quoting the past and just presents the form, which is closer to how the brand's designer collaborators treat it, including Action Bronson across several models and Paul Smith on a 576 in June 2018.
Construction
The upper is a layered mix of mesh, suede and synthetic overlays, all worked in near black tones so the panelling reads as texture and depth rather than as colour blocking. Underfoot New Balance uses ABZORB, the proprietary foam and rubber polymer blend engineered to disperse heel strike impact before it travels into the knees and hips, and the exaggerated 9060 midsole gives that cushioning real volume. Softer and lighter than ENCAP, it is a comfort platform rather than a stability one. The black midsole and outsole hide scuffs that a cream or grey build would show within a week.
