Origin
Released on 18 April 2023 and part of New Balance's 990v3 line. This release has a suede upper in Dark Grey/Black. The 990 is the shoe that made New Balance a premium brand. Conceived in 1978 and launched in 1982, it set a price nobody else in running was asking, and the third version arrived in 2012 as part of a line that had by then become an American institution. This pair is a Made in USA 990v3 finished in charcoal for United Arrows, which puts it at the intersection New Balance now lives at: New England factories on one side, a Japanese retailer's editing eye on the other. Charcoal is the correct colour for that meeting. It is the darker cousin of the grey that made the 99x family famous, serious rather than soft, and it suits a shoe built to be worn rather than displayed.

Construction
ENCAP is the classic New Balance midsole and it runs under the 990: a moulded polyurethane rim encapsulating a soft EVA core, so the polyurethane supplies structure, durability and low compression set while the EVA absorbs shock. The result is stability without a dead ride, which is why the 990 became the shoe people stand in all day. Made in USA is a product signature in its own right, stamped on the tongue badge, and it is a large part of why New Balance prices above competitors.
