The Rebel is the fast trainer in the New Balance running range, the shoe for the runs where you want speed without committing to a race shoe, and the fifth version continues a line that has always been about being light before anything else. Mint Flash sets the tone precisely: mint is a cool, pale green with a synthetic edge, flash is the brightness that comes with it, and together they belong to the modern language of running kit rather than to anything in the brand's grey heritage. This is a company that began in 1906 selling arch supports and spent decades known for sensible shoes, which makes a colourway this electric a deliberate change of subject.
Use one: tempo runs, progression runs and intervals on road or track, with light technical socks and shorts, where the foam's rebound actually earns its place. Use two: shorter race distances up to a half marathon if you prefer a lighter, less aggressive shoe than a full racer. Keep your slow miles in a cushioned daily trainer so this pair lasts. Air them out after each session rather than leaving them in a kit bag, brush grit off the outsole, and never machine wash or dry them on a radiator, since heat degrades foam and adhesives faster than any amount of mileage will.
The brand's running identity is built on participation rather than personality. The Trackster spread in 1960 through YMCA fitness programmes and college cross country teams at MIT, Tufts and Boston University, and the sponsorship of New York Road Runners keeps New Balance tied to the amateur running community rather than to celebrity sport. A fast trainer is the most honest product in that world, because nobody buys one to be seen in. Mint Flash reflects how much running kit has changed anyway, with saturated brights now standard across the sport, and a bright green shoe reading as normal on a group run rather than as a statement.
FuelCell is New Balance's performance foam, a nitrogen injected blend of TPU and EVA engineered for rebound and propulsion, and in the running application it is the bouncy end of the brand's cushioning rather than the structured end. On a lightweight trainer that character defines the shoe: it wants a quick turnover and rewards running at pace rather than plodding. Everything above is kept minimal to protect weight, so expect a close, unpadded fit typical of fast trainers. New Balance's oldest technical promise, multiple width fittings from its arch support origins, is worth using here, because a light shoe with little structure depends entirely on getting the width right.
