Released on 16 December 2024 and part of New Balance's 327 line. This release has a suede upper in Raincloud/Reflection. Raincloud Reflection is the women's 327 in the brand's own grey language. The 327 is the one modern New Balance that is openly a design exercise, built from the cues of the label's older racing shoes, the low profile and the flared outsole, with the block N blown up until it spans most of the side wall. The block N is the house mark, so scaling it to that size is a statement of confidence rather than a graphic accident. In raincloud grey with reflective detailing, the shoe keeps its bold proportions while sitting inside the palette that made New Balance recognisable in the first place.
Wear it with cropped straight leg denim and a grey knit so the flared outsole and the big N stay visible, socks white or grey at the ankle. The second recipe is softer, a mid length skirt or wide trousers with a cream top, where the low profile shoe keeps the silhouette from getting heavy at the bottom. This is a flat everyday shoe for city days and evenings, not a long distance walker or a training shoe. Brush the suede in one direction, wipe reflective panels with a soft dry cloth rather than a brush, and clean the flared outsole sidewall, which picks up road film quickly.
The 327 exists because the culture had already decided New Balance's own visual language was worth something. The 990 family became the archetypal American dad shoe, worn for comfort rather than status, and normcore then high fashion reclaimed that plainness through the 2010s until the brand's mundane grey and its block N became assets rather than embarrassments. The 327 is the design department's answer, a deliberately graphic shoe made possible by that shift. It also fits a collaboration programme built on designers and independents, from Paul Smith on a 576 in June 2018 to Action Bronson across several models, rather than on celebrity endorsement.
The upper mixes suede and mesh with synthetic panels, the oversized N cut as a structural piece rather than printed on, with raincloud grey across the base and reflective detailing catching light where a contrast colour would normally sit. That reflective treatment changes the shoe under headlights and camera flash while keeping it quiet in daylight. The outsole flares beyond the upper and wraps up at the heel, giving the 327 its stance and its grip. There is no bulky cushioning platform here, so it sits low and firm rather than plush. New Balance's width fittings are its oldest technical promise, and a low profile shoe like this benefits from getting that right.
