Origin
Released on 12 September 2021 and part of the XC-72 line. This release has a leather upper in Castlerock/Black. The XC-72 is New Balance mining its own running past and coming back with something that never quite existed. The reference points are the brand's cross country and road racing shoes from the era when the company was still small, still mostly mail order, and had just been bought by Jim Davis in 1972 with six employees making around thirty pairs a day. The name points straight at that year. What the design does is take those low, narrow, flat racing shapes and rebuild them with a curve and a stance that belongs to now, retro futurism rather than reissue. Castlerock is the grey that suits it best, a cool deep stone tone that keeps the shoe reading as engineering rather than as costume.
Utility
Castlerock grey is a cool toned neutral, so it pairs best with blues, blacks and other greys rather than browns. First recipe: black tapered trousers with a grey zip up and a navy shell jacket, where the curved sole gives an otherwise flat outfit some shape. Second: dark straight jeans and a plain white tee, letting the layered panelling be the only detail. Because the sole is curved, these are better for walking cities than for standing still all day. The fit is narrower than a 574, so consider a wider fitting if your foot is broad. Brush the mesh gently, keep suede overlays dry, and avoid scrubbing the midsole edge where the curve wears first.
Influence
New Balance's other long thread, alongside the accidental fame of its grey running shoes, is running itself. From the Trackster of 1960 spreading through YMCA fitness programmes and cross country teams at MIT, Tufts and Boston University, to its sponsorship of New York Road Runners, the brand has stayed anchored in amateur running rather than celebrity sport. The XC-72 is an object made out of that thread, a cross country reference for people who will never race. It also sits inside the reappraisal that turned the archive into a fashion line, formalised when Aime Leon Dore founder Teddy Santis became creative director of Made in USA in April 2021.
Construction
A mixed upper of mesh with suede and synthetic overlays, layered in narrow racing panels across the castlerock grey base, with the block N stretched along the side wall. The XC-72 sits on a curved EVA midsole with a pronounced toe spring, which is why it feels like it rolls you forward when you walk rather than sitting flat like a 574. The rubber outsole is segmented under the forefoot for flex. It is a light shoe for its visual size, and the narrow racing last means it fits closer through the midfoot than most New Balance lifestyle models, so the brand's multiple width fittings, its oldest technical promise, are worth using here rather than ignoring.
