Designed by Peter Moore and part of Nike's Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in Black/Gym Red/Sail. Everything about the Air Jordan 1 comes from a decision Nike made in 1984, when it signed Michael Jordan and turned a single athlete into a business with its own name. Black, white and gym red is the original argument in its purest form: the palette that made the line notorious before anyone had seen the shoe play. On the Low, that colour blocking has to work harder, because there is no ankle collar to carry the panels, so the toe, the eyestay and the heel do all the talking. The result is the most quoted colour scheme in sneakers on the most wearable version of the shape, which is precisely why the Low never goes out of rotation.
Two builds. Classic: black straight leg or slightly baggy denim, a white tee, a black bomber, letting the red read as the only accent. Sharper: grey wool trousers with a break, a black knit and a heavy overcoat, where the Low's slim profile keeps the whole thing from looking like sportswear. Jordan 1 Lows fit true but the leather is stiff at first, so wear them in short. Avoid deep puddles and dry naturally if caught in rain. Clean the white panels the same day they mark, condition the leather every couple of months, and stuff the toe box in storage so the crease does not set into a fold.
The story people repeat about this palette is usually told wrong. The shoe cited under the NBA's uniform rule was the Nike Air Ship prototype rather than the Air Jordan I, and Nike paid the fines and built a campaign out of it. What is beyond argument is what followed: the Spike Lee directed advertising, with Lee playing Mars Blackmon opposite Jordan, made Nike the shoe of basketball and, through basketball, the shoe of hip hop. From the 1980s the Air Jordan line became a status object in urban dress and stayed one. Black and red is the colour combination that carries all of it, which is why it is treated as a reference point rather than as a colourway.
The Jordan 1 build is old fashioned in the best way: a leather style panelled upper, a stitched Swoosh, a wing logo at the ankle on the higher cuts, and a flat rubber outsole with a herringbone bite. Cutting it low changes the wearing experience completely, opening the ankle and turning a basketball shoe into something you can wear all day. Black and red across white means every panel edge reads sharply and every scuff on the white shows, so protect it early. Nike Air is the pressurised gas cushioning sealed into the midsole, hidden here rather than shown. Keep the leather conditioned, use a soft brush on the white panels, and let creasing happen across the toe.
