Designed by Tobie Hatfield and released on 20 September 2018 as part of Nike's Air Presto line. This release has the White/Dynamic Yellow-Black colourway. Dynamic yellow is a colour with nowhere to hide, and the Air Presto Mid was already the least conventional shape Nike put into general release: a shoe sold in t-shirt sizing that fit like a sock and treated the upper as a stretch panel held by an external cage. The Acronym version pushes it further by adding a mid cut and a zip, turning a running derived slip on into something closer to technical outerwear for the foot. Nike's engineering habits made this possible. The company has spent decades trying to hold the foot with less material, from Flywire cables to lightweight foams, and the Presto is that ambition in its most extreme wearable form.
Yellow this loud wants black around it. Run technical black trousers with a black shell jacket and let the shoe be the only colour in the frame, which is the way this silhouette was designed to be seen. For a softer version, wear grey sweatpants with a black hoodie so the yellow reads as a highlight rather than a siren. Good for travel, city walking and cold weather layering, less good for formal rooms. Presto sizing runs in apparel style grades and fits like a sock, so go by fit rather than habit and try before committing. Clean mesh with a soft brush and mild soap, and keep the zip clear of grit so it keeps running smoothly.
Technical fashion and Nike have circled each other for decades, and the Presto is where the two meet most comfortably: it was strange enough at launch to be adopted by people who cared about design before they cared about sport. Nike's own history is full of moments where the product outran the marketing, from Bowerman's waffle sole to the Air Max making cushioning a visible design feature in 1987. A high visibility yellow Acronym Presto belongs to that lineage of shoes bought for their ideas. In India it stands out sharply, which is either the entire appeal or the reason to skip it.
The Presto's logic is a stretch mesh upper working with a moulded cage, so the shoe adapts to the foot instead of the foot adapting to a last. The mid cut extends that sock structure up the ankle, and the zip closure gives you a way in without slackening the fit. Nike's minimal upper work, Flywire cabling among it, exists to hold the foot with as little material as possible, and the Presto is that thinking taken to its conclusion. Underfoot sits a soft foam midsole with rubber pods for traction. In dynamic yellow, the cage and the mesh sit in different finishes, so the shoe reads as constructed rather than dyed.
