Designed by Designer. This piece is made in upper material. The mark on this jacket is the most valuable graphic in sportswear, and it cost Nike almost nothing. Carolyn Davidson, then a graphic design student, drew the Swoosh; it was first used on 18 June 1971 and registered as a trademark on 22 January 1974. Blowing it up across the chest of a reversible boa jacket is the company treating its own logo as a pattern rather than a signature, which only works because the shape is recognisable at any scale. Black is the correct base for that move. It removes every competing element, so the Swoosh reads as geometry, and the jacket becomes a piece of graphic design you can wear rather than a branded layer.
Recipe one: black jacket fleece side out over a white tee and straight black trousers, so the texture and the Swoosh carry the outfit and nothing else competes. Recipe two: flipped to the smooth face, worn under an unlined overcoat with grey wool trousers, for warmth that does not add visual bulk to a tailored line. Reversible pieces are cut generously to work both ways, so expect a roomy fit and size down if you want it close. This is a cold, dry weather layer: pile fleece soaks up rain and takes a long time to dry. Store it hanging rather than folded, since long term compression flattens the pile in the creases.
Just Do It, written by Dan Wieden in 1988 and first aired on 1 July that year with the eighty year old runner Walt Stack, gave Nike a voice that outgrew sport; Advertising Age later named it one of the top five slogans of the twentieth century and it sits in the Smithsonian. The Swoosh does the same job without words. Once Air Jordans, Air Force 1s and Air Max models had made Nike a status marker in urban and hip hop fashion through the 1980s, the logo stopped needing explanation, and oversized branding became a deliberate style rather than an accident. This jacket is that logic at full volume.
Boa is a deep pile fleece, so this is a jacket built on loft rather than weight: the fibres trap air, and the warmth comes from that trapped air rather than from a heavy shell. Reversible construction means both faces are finished, which changes how the garment is made throughout, with clean seams, no exposed lining and pockets that have to work in both orientations. Wear it fleece out for texture, or flipped for a smoother silhouette under a bigger coat. Pile flattens permanently under heat, so wash cool, skip fabric softener, which coats the fibres and kills loft, and air dry rather than tumbling it.
