Designed by Bruce Kilgore and released on 7 May 2024 as part of Nike's Air Force 1 line. This release has a leather upper in Black/Black/White. Cactus Plant Flea Market works by taking a familiar object and making it slightly wrong on purpose, and a premium black Air Force 1 Low is a strong surface for that because black hides nothing structurally while giving up all colour information. The Air Force 1 is the right shoe for this treatment because it is public property: from the 1980s it became a status symbol in urban and hip hop fashion, then a staple of mainstream American youth dress, then a fixture of 1990s and 2000s casual and athleisure looks. Anything altered on it is noticed immediately. In black, the alterations read as texture and hardware rather than as graphics.
Two ways to wear it. All black: black wide trousers, a black tee and a black jacket, where the shoe adds texture to a monochrome outfit and the details reveal themselves only close up. Or break it: light grey trousers with a cream knit, so the shoe grounds the outfit and the collaboration reads as intentional rather than incidental. This handles evening far better than a white pair. Size half down if narrow. Black leather shows dust more than dirt, so a dry brush is often enough, and a conditioner keeps the finish from going grey at the crease. Keep the added hardware away from abrasion.
Nike has widened its idea of collaboration well past footwear, acquiring the virtual sneaker studio RTFKT and working with artist Takashi Murakami on digital product, and its longest creative partnership remains the one with Wieden+Kennedy that produced Just Do It in 1988. Independent studios reinterpreting the archive belong to the same instinct: let someone outside Beaverton argue with the shape. On a black premium Air Force 1, that argument is quiet, which is the harder version to pull off and the easier version to actually wear.
Underneath sits the standard Air Force 1 Low: panelled upper, perforated toe box, padded collar, foam midsole with Nike Air sealed inside and the pivot circle rubber outsole. The premium designation points to a richer upper material than the base 07, which on a black pair is what separates a good build from a flat one, since finish and grain are the only things you can read at that value. Collaborator work on this model tends to come through duplicated components, alternate branding and hardware rather than shape changes, so the fit is unchanged and the visual difference is concentrated in the details you notice up close. The added components wear faster than the leather itself.
