Origin
Designed by Peter Moore and released on 12 May 2022 as part of Nike's Dunk line. This release has a leather upper in White/Gym Red/White. White and gym red is the oldest argument in American sportswear, the colour pair that says gymnasium before it says anything else. This women's Dunk Low carries it under the Next Nature label, which is Nike's line for product built with recycled content. That thinking is not new for the company: Nike Grind has been feeding manufacturing scrap and worn shoes back into new product and surfaces for years, and Next Nature is where that logic meets a shoe people actually want to wear daily. The result is a familiar court low in the most legible colourway the brand owns, made with a different bill of materials. You are buying the classic read, not a compromise version of it, and the red overlay does all the signalling on its own.
Utility
First recipe: light wash straight jeans, a white ribbed tank and a red or burgundy cardigan, letting the gym red overlay pull the top half down to the floor. Second: a black midi skirt with a white shirt tucked in, where the red becomes the only colour in the outfit and reads intentional rather than sporty. Good for campus, weekend markets and travel days when you need to walk without thinking about it. Take your normal size; women's Dunks fit snug across the toe box at first and open up after a week. Nike's shift from track to culture ran through basketball and then through hip hop, and by the 1980s and 1990s the brand's low top court shoes were mainstream American youth dress rather than gear. The Next Nature framing adds the argument that the sneaker's second life matters, which puts this pair in conversation with Nike Grind rather than with limited drops. Construction
Next Nature product uses recycled content in place of virgin material, so expect a slightly different hand than a straight leather Dunk: a bit more give, a touch less of the hard shine that new leather has out of the box. The panel structure is unchanged, with the gym red overlays framing a white base and a red Swoosh landing where the eye goes first. Nike's foam and rubber sole logic under a court upper comes from Bowerman's belief that the sole is where the engineering lives. Padded collar, padded tongue and a lace structure that lets you dial down the midfoot. Women's sizing runs on the women's last, so the shape is narrower through the heel than the men's grade.
