Part of the Heritage Vulc line. This release has a suede upper in Vast Grey/Iron Grey/Vast Grey. The Heritage Vulc is Nike SB's plain shoe, the low cut vulcanised model that skate shops stock as the default. This pair runs vast grey against iron grey, two tones of the same colour with no third accent, which is about as quiet as a skate shoe gets. Nike came to skating late and from a position of enormous scale, having held about half the US athletic shoe market since 1980, so its most convincing skate product has always been the least branded. Grey on grey is that instinct taken to the end: a shoe defined by shape and sole construction rather than by colour blocking or any signature technology on show.
Two greys are a base layer, so let something else carry the outfit: black jeans with a heavy stack, a washed navy jacket, white socks showing. The second recipe is tonal, with grey sweatpants and a grey hoodie, where the iron grey overlays keep the look from turning flat. This is a shoe for walking, standing and skating, not for running or gym work; there is no arch support to speak of. Sizing is true to length and slim through the toe. Brush dirt off dry, spot clean with a damp cloth, and never machine wash, because heat and tumbling break the sole to upper bond that makes a vulc shoe work.
Nike SB carries an awkward history with the scene it sells to, most publicly when it used Minor Threat's album art in 2005 and had to apologise after Ian MacKaye objected. What survived that is the product that does not try to borrow credibility. Grey on grey Heritage Vulcs are the anti statement shoe: no colourway to date them, no collaborator name, no story except the sole construction. That has made plain vulc lows one of the few sneaker categories that never really cycles, worn as much by people who have never stepped on a board as by people who have.
Vulcanised rubber is the point. The outsole is bonded to the upper under heat rather than dropped into a cupsole, which keeps the platform thin and flexible so you feel the board through the sole. The upper is cut simply with reinforcement where grip tape does the damage, the tongue and collar carry enough foam to take impact without adding bulk, and the lacing runs flat. Vast grey on the base with iron grey overlays means wear shows as tonal change rather than as a stain, which is the practical advantage of a two grey build. Nike's engineering instinct has always been to remove material, and this is that instinct applied to a skate shoe.
