Designed by Eric Avar and released on 6 September 2024 as part of the Kobe 8 System line. This release has a mesh upper in Black/University Gold/White/Court Purple. Nike built the signature basketball shoe as a category when it signed Michael Jordan in 1984 and turned one athlete into a business rather than an endorsement. The Kobe line is one of the results of that model, and the 8 is remembered as the low, light, close-to-the-floor entry in it, a shoe that argued against the heavy high tops most brands were selling at the time. Protro marks a retooled return of the model rather than a straight reissue. Lakers Away is a purple and gold away-kit palette, which is the most direct colour statement the line has, and it makes the shoe legible to anyone who watched basketball in that period.
Recipe one, on court: shorts with compression tights and a low sock, laced tight through the midfoot, because a low top only works if the foot is genuinely locked over the platform. Recipe two, off court: black tapered trousers or dark denim with a plain grey crew, letting the purple and gold be the only colour and keeping everything else neutral, since this palette overwhelms a busy fit instantly. Basketball shoes should fit snug with no heel lift, so buy tight rather than roomy. Wipe the outsole before each session, keep them off outdoor concrete if you care about the tread, and let them air out fully between wears.
Nike's authority in basketball is both cultural and contractual: the Jordan signing and the Spike Lee directed Mars Blackmon advertising made it the sport's shoe and, through the sport, part of hip hop dress from the 1980s onward, while commercially it has been the official on court uniform supplier to the NBA, WNBA and NBA G League since 2017 under a deal signed in June 2015 and extended for another twelve years as announced in October 2024. A team-colour signature model sits exactly where those two things overlap: it is a performance shoe, a piece of league iconography and a wardrobe item, depending on who is wearing it.
A low-cut basketball build focused on court feel: a lightweight upper with structured support through the midfoot, minimal collar height so the ankle is free to move, and cushioning tuned for landing and quick direction change rather than for distance. Nike Air, the pressurised gas unit sealed in the midsole, is the underlying cushioning technology the company has used since 1987 to make impact protection part of a shoe's design rather than a hidden component. The outsole is rubber with a traction pattern built for hard court. A Protro version is a retooled retro, so the materials and the cushioning are updated while the silhouette stays the one people recognise.
