Designed by Jason Petrie and released on 18 February 2022 as part of the LeBron 9 line. This release has a synthetic upper in Total Orange/Reflect Silver/Team Orange. The LeBron line is the direct descendant of the deal that changed Nike forever. Signing Michael Jordan in 1984 and marketing him through Spike Lee's Mars Blackmon character turned a running company into the shoe of basketball, and through basketball into the shoe of hip hop, and it proved that a single athlete's name could carry an entire business. LeBron James is a Nike signature athlete and endorser, and the ninth shoe in his line landed in the era when signature basketball models were built like performance armour rather than lifestyle pieces. A loud All-Star shoe needs a quiet outfit and a confident wearer. First: black tapered sweatpants with a tucked hem so the whole shoe is visible, a plain black hoodie, and nothing else competing. Second: dark denim, a solid team style tee in one colour pulled from the shoe, and white socks, a nod fit rather than a full costume. It works for games, courtside and city nights, not for formal rooms. Basketball models fit snug through the midfoot, so size true unless your foot is wide. Keep the translucent and metallic areas out of prolonged sun, clean with a barely damp cloth, and never brush a metallic panel hard enough to dull it.
All-Star weekend is the closest basketball gets to a fashion week, and Nike has used it as such since the signature era began. The brand has been official on court uniform supplier to the NBA, WNBA and NBA G League since 2017 under a deal signed in June 2015 and extended for twelve more years as announced in October 2024, so it sits inside the event rather than around it. LeBron James, a Nike signature athlete and endorser, also carries weight beyond the court: he publicly supported Colin Kaepernick when Nike built a long term campaign around him in September 2018, a moment that drew product burnings and police union condemnation as well as support.
Signature basketball shoes of this generation were dense with technology and this one wears it openly. Nike Air, the pressurised gas unit sealed in the midsole, is the house cushioning platform, and Flywire, the cable system that holds the foot with minimal upper material, is what keeps a heavily built shoe from becoming a heavy one. All-Star editions add finish rather than function: iridescent, metallic and translucent treatments that ordinary team colourways never carry. Those materials are the fragile part. Translucent outsoles yellow with UV exposure, and metallic coatings mark from friction rather than dirt. Treat this as a display and occasion shoe if the finish matters to you, and as a court shoe if it does not.
