Designed by Peter Moore and released on 7 November 2017 as part of Nike's Dunk SB line. This release has the Black/Black-Sienna colourway. Nike SB is the part of the company that had to earn its place rather than buy it. Skateboarding was suspicious of a corporation that by 1980 already held around half the US athletic shoe market, so the SB line worked through shops, riders and small releases instead of mass distribution. The Dunk Low became its main vehicle because the panel layout is simple enough to carry someone else's idea without being buried by it. The Black Pigeon is one of the releases people quote when they explain why SB Dunks became collector objects at all, and the black colourway is the severe reading of it: dark, restrained, and identifiable only to people who already know.
Recipe one: baggy black denim stacked over the toe, a plain grey hoodie and a black beanie, which is the shoe's native context and the only one where the thick tongue looks correct rather than bulky. Recipe two: charcoal wool trousers with a black knit and a heavy overcoat, where an all-black Dunk becomes a legitimate winter city shoe. SB Dunks fit slightly snug because of the padding, so if you are between sizes go up. Lace loosely and let the tongue sit tall. Clean the suede with a dry crepe brush only, keep water off it, and if you actually skate in these, accept the wear as the point rather than fighting it.
SB is also where Nike learned the limits of borrowing. In 2005 the line appropriated Minor Threat's 1981 album art for a tour flyer, Ian MacKaye publicly objected, and Nike apologised on 27 June 2005 and settled out of court. That episode sits behind the whole SB collector economy: these shoes matter because they are tied to specific people and scenes, and that tie can be pulled the wrong way. The Pigeon releases became shorthand for the moment SB shoes moved from skate shops into queues, resale and news coverage. The black version is the quiet one, and quiet is what the people who actually lived through that period tend to prefer now.
Dunk Low architecture with skate intent: a leather and suede panelled upper, a padded tongue and collar built to survive board contact, and a rubber outsole descended from the waffle tread Bowerman created by pouring rubber into a waffle iron, which is still the best pattern Nike has for grip on a gritty surface. The SB build adds cushioning under the foot for impact rather than for running, and the tongue is deliberately thick, which changes how the lacing sits compared with a standard Dunk. Style code 883232 008 identifies this make-up. Black hides scuffing better than any other colourway on this shoe, which is either a feature or a shame depending on whether you skate.
