Origin
Released on 16 November 2022 and part of Nike's Dunk SB line. This release has a leather upper in Black/Vast Grey/White. Keith Hufnagel came up skating the Brooklyn Banks, turned pro in California in 1993, then moved west and opened the first HUF shop in San Francisco's Tenderloin in 2002. That store is where skate culture and streetwear started speaking the same language. He died in 2020 at 46 after a fight with brain cancer, and two years later Nike SB marked HUF's twentieth year with a Dunk Low built as a tribute rather than a product drop. San Francisco is the half of that project honouring the city he chose. Style code FD8775-001, black over vast grey and white with orange running underneath, the palette of the city where HUF began. Its twin, the NYC pair, covers the city he came from.
Utility
Two ways to run it. First, the skate-honest fit: loose black carpenter or double-knee pants stacked over the toe box, a boxy white tee, a beanie, and let the orange peeking through the eyestay do the only colour work. Second, cleaner: mid-blue straight jeans cuffed once so the reflective skyline stays visible above the heel, a grey hoodie, a black cap. Nike SB Dunks run true to size, but stiffer collab leather plus the thick tongue and heel Zoom unit eat interior space, so wide feet should take half a size up. Break them in before you skate them. To keep the tumbled leather right, wipe with a damp cloth, condition occasionally, and stuff them in storage so the toe box holds its shape.
Influence
HUF and Nike SB go back to 2004, when the first HUF Worldwide Dunk High put Hufnagel's New York street instincts alongside the colourful bohemian energy of his adopted San Francisco. Eighteen years later the Dunk Low returned the favour. Nike shipped it as a limited blind bag edition, so buyers did not get to choose their city, which turned the release into a conversation instead of a checkout. Skateboarding treated the pair as a memorial rather than a flip, which is rare for any Dunk with this much heat behind it. The shortest version of why it carries weight: the heel does not say HUF, it says KEITH, and anyone who skated through the 2000s understood exactly what that meant.
Construction
The upper is tumbled leather, softer and more lived-in than the stiff panels most collab Dunks ship with, so it creases into shape instead of fighting you. A white base sits under black overlays, with HUF printed across the toe vamp and a metallic Swoosh cutting through it. The heel tabs carry embroidered KEITH on one side and FOREVER on the other, and just below sits a reflective San Francisco skyline that only announces itself under a camera flash. A concealed white and orange tie-dye hides beneath the outer layer, worth knowing about before your first real scuff. Inside is standard Nike SB hardware: a thick padded tongue, a cushioned ankle collar and a Zoom Air unit in the heel for landings.
