Culture Note™
Released on 20 September 2024 and part of Nike's Dunk SB line. This release has a faux fur upper in Blue Gaze/Light Arctic Pink/Bicycle Yellow. Verdy Visty is an artist project on a skate shoe, and it behaves like one: a character driven visual language dropped onto the Dunk's panels with none of the restraint a performance brief would impose. The blue tone does the heavy lifting, keeping the shoe from tipping fully into toy territory, while the graphic elements sit where a team colour would normally go. Nike SB is the only part of the company where this happens as a matter of routine rather than as an event, which is why the division has become the most reliable place to find Nike shoes designed by people who do not work in sportswear.
A graphic shoe sets a one pattern limit for the whole outfit. Try loose faded black jeans with a plain white tee, or grey sweatpants with a black crew, and let the shoe be the only thing with a drawing on it. Cuff the hem clear of the collar so the heel and side detailing are visible, since that is where artist releases put their best work. Dry days only: printed graphics on a sneaker do not recover from a soaking. Sizing follows the Dunk last, long through the toe, half down for most, true to size for skating. Keep the spare laces and the box.
Nike has worked with artists directly rather than only licensing their look, including the collaboration with Takashi Murakami on digital product in 2022, and it has learned the hard way what happens when it takes visual work without asking. Its use of the Beatles' Revolution in 1987 without Apple Records' approval ended in a lawsuit and the ads being pulled in March 1988, and Nike SB's appropriation of Minor Threat's album art in 2005 drew a public rebuke and an apology on 27 June 2005. Authored artist releases are the corrected version of that history.
An SB Dunk Low, built with a padded tongue and collar for board impact, a Zoom Air insole underneath and a rubber cupsole with skate tread. Artist releases carry their design into the pieces most people never look at, so expect graphic detailing on the insole, the lining, the heel and sometimes the outsole itself, and expect a second lace set in the box. Cleaning is panel specific and gentle: brush napped sections dry, wipe smooth panels with a barely damp cloth, and leave printed or embroidered graphics untouched unless necessary. Underfoot the SB build is noticeably softer in the heel than a standard Dunk.
