Released on 20 March 2025 and part of Nike's Vomero 18 line. This release has a mesh upper in Black/Dark Smoke Grey/Light Smoke Grey/Black. Bill Bowerman's founding complaint was weight. He poured rubber into a waffle iron because he was convinced runners were carrying more shoe than they needed, and the pursuit of lighter cushioning has run through Nike ever since, through foams like Lunarlite and eventually into ZoomX. The Vomero sits at the other end of that argument: it is the cushioned end of Nike's running range, the shoe built for people who want depth underfoot rather than minimal material. This eighteenth version arrives in triple black, an all one colour treatment that strips out every contrast panel. On a shoe this heavily cushioned, going monochrome is what makes the volume look intentional rather than bulky.
Two uses. As intended: easy and moderate daily mileage on road, where the deep cushioning protects your legs across a training week, worn with technical socks and running kit. As worn: black trackpants or straight leg jeans with a dark jacket, where a monochrome trainer disappears into the outfit and simply does the job of being comfortable. It is excellent for travel, long walking days and standing work. Size with a thumbnail of room at the toe, and go up half if you run in thick socks. Care is easy: brush off dirt when dry, never machine wash or heat dry, since heat deforms midsole foam permanently, and air them out between wears to keep the interior fresh.
Nike's running shoes have spent the last decade migrating into everyday wardrobes, and cushioned trainers in single colour treatments led that move. The technical running shoe as street footwear is not a new idea, but it used to depend on retro models rather than current ones. Triple black changed that by making a performance silhouette wearable with normal clothes. It is the same logic that has powered Nike since the 1980s, when its sport models became fixtures of urban and hip hop dress and then of casual and athleisure wardrobes, applied to a product that is still genuinely built to run in rather than to reference running.
A cushioned daily trainer with a tall, soft midsole and an engineered mesh upper, finished entirely in black so that the sole unit, the upper and the branding all read as a single mass. That is the point of a triple black makeup: it disguises volume, which is why heavily cushioned shoes wear this treatment so often. Underfoot the priority is impact absorption over ground feel, so the ride is soft and protective rather than responsive, and the shoe is heavier than a racing model by a wide margin. Mesh uppers breathe well and dry quickly, which matters in humidity. Black uppers hide dirt but show salt marks from sweat, so they need occasional attention despite looking maintenance free.
