Released on 3 November 2023 and part of adidas's Samba line. This release has a leather upper in Aluminium/Aluminium/Wonder Mauve. Human Race is the line Pharrell Williams built with adidas around colour and material rather than around new silhouettes, and running it through the Samba is the most restrained version of that idea. Aluminium with Wonder Mauve gives you a cool metallic grey against a dusty pink-purple, two soft tones with no black anywhere, which changes the Samba's character completely: the football shoe becomes something closer to a garment. Pharrell has been an adidas designer collaborator long enough to have earned access to the brand's most protected shapes, and the Samba is the most protected of all.
Two soft tones want an equally soft outfit. First recipe: grey or stone wide trousers with a white or ecru knit, so the mauve reads as a considered accent inside a neutral build. Second: washed black denim with a grey sweatshirt, where the metallic grey ties to the top and the mauve is the only warmth. This is a flat, narrow, lightly cushioned shoe for walking and standing, not distance, and many people size up half a size. Wear thin socks. Protect it before the first wear, avoid rain entirely with a palette this pale, and clean the sidewall before dirt sets into the gum.
Pharrell Williams is one of the designer collaborators through whom adidas built its creative partnership model, which the brand effectively invented with Yohji Yamamoto's Y-3 and Stella McCartney from 2004 before extending it to Jeremy Scott, Raf Simons and Alexander Wang. Handing the Samba to a collaborator is not a small gesture: this is a shoe that became the base layer of European terrace and casual dressing on its own, without any endorsement. adidas has always benefited from being adopted rather than chosen, from Run-DMC in 1986 onward, and the Human Race Samba works because it respects that inheritance instead of overwriting it.
Samba architecture underneath, which means a low narrow last, a leather and suede upper with the T-shaped toe reinforcement and a gum outsole built for pivoting, with the Three Stripes stitched to the quarter panel in their original reinforcing position. The Human Race treatment lives in the surfaces, so read the aluminium and mauve as material choices rather than prints. Both tones are pale, which makes this a shoe that needs protecting before the first wear and cleaning little and often afterwards. Brush suede dry in one direction, use a barely damp cloth on smooth panels, and keep the gum sidewall clean since grey creep ruins a soft palette faster than it does a dark one.
